The player's individual development is principally the outcome of the player's internal motivation to improve. Coaches don't push that motivation into a player. Coaches serve to inspire that player to find the motivation and ultimately, the grit needed to become better.

It's that grit that pushes the player to spend the extra time on her own improving skill or expanding fitness or learning the game and how it's played at a deeper and higher level.

It's down to the one attribute that leads to greatness above all other attributes......persistence.

A good coach creates a culture in which motivated players apply themselves to make themselves better. He or she inspires them to apply themselves.

But don't be confused, this is almost all within the mind and heart of the player. Learning is an internal thing. Player development is driven far more by internal machinations than anything a coach can do.

          This bears repeating.

If your player has this, the level of the team this year won't matter, they will excel (not regress). If that happens and are the clear superstar of the team, playing every minute of every game, then next year the club will almost certainly move her, and if not, you can seek a higher level team.

You club will not move her if they do not have a higher level team in the age group. They may move her up in this case when you tell them you are leaving, but never bet on any club to do the right thing for your kid .... it is all about $ and winning to bring in more kids to collect even more $ next year.

I can vouch for being the outlier here. We were told they could not offer anything else for us, they had maxed it out and we needed to go to a different club.

                Yes, it was rare.

It's possible they're just not at the right level, not that necessarily the coach is doing anything wrong overall. Take the player to a few practices at clubs/league a level up (call them and ask). They may be ready to move up, or you may see that they're actually at the right level. But you'll never know until you look. You might not be able to get them on a team right now. Doing the legwork now means you're not scrambling when opportunities open up.

Be careful - sometimes the grass isn't always greener. Being a bench warmer on a better team won't do them any good either
