There really is a Rural 1A classification that many private schools participate in because of the size of the school and being rural???

montVerde is a good example. How is it fair that they compete against typical public schools?

Do MontVerde players practice soccer year round at the private school?

It is a private dorm school where the kids live and practice together year round as I understand it. Most are foreign and even the coaches don’t speak much English.

Don’t most high schools have to follow specific FHSAA rules about when players can condition, tryout, begin formal practices with a coach, etc.?

Because high school coaches are not required to play teams in their district during the regular season will coaches schedule games further away to play better ranked teams try to get more MaxPreps points?

As stated earlier in this thread. They are already doing this for football and for the most part, little has changed as far as scheduling. What it ended was having teams that finished with only a couple of wins in a weak district making the playoffs and rewarded teams in tougher districts.

They used to not be able to compete in FHSAS but was allowed to a few years ago. They are just like IMG and seems unfair to regular schools. They recruit just like Some of the “small 1a” schools

IMG is not part of FHSAA, they can play teams, but they are unable to compete in the playoffs or be in a district. Most of the teams they play are out of state.

My point was that MontVerde is just like IMG. Both are private sports schools that recruit players. Seems unfair to have to compete against them for a state title. SimilR to St Johns Cohnty Day School who also recruits

The Mont Verde soccer program and players post pictures of team long runs, weight training and soccer training that occurs daily as part of the school curriculum.

No, they shouldn't...what prevented IMG from being able to play against teams and competing for a state title was High Football coaches who had some clout with the FHSAA and essentially pooled their influence to make sure IMG was never allowed to be apart of the state championship series. Soccer, unfortunately, has no one with that level of power or influence, so teams like Monteverde are able to compete.

The correct solution is simple. All private schools should compete in a separate "private school" playoff division. This is done in some states. The real problem is the whole 1A-8A system designed to have similarly sized schools competing against each other for school size based state championships is irrelevant to private schools. As everyone knows private schools can and do recruit specifically for sports. They don't have to rely on pulling talent from "x" number of students. A perfect example of this is St. Johns Country Day school. With a 9-12th grade population of 180 students, they manage to have one of the best girls high school soccer teams in the state. Presumably about half the students are boys so this means they are winning state championships out of a base of 90 students 9-12th grade. Separate them and the other private schools out and have them compete for their own state championship against American Heritage, Berkely Prep, Archbishop McArthy, etc... The way things are now you could argue that 2A & 3A are the toughest divisions for public schools to win a state championship because their enrollment is in the sweet spot of where many of the private schools sit.

SJCDS roster is full of middle schoolers, so you need to consider the 6-12 student population, not just HS.
