Why is that a bad idea. When they get older, the teams cover two age groups so why not just begin that earlier. Less distruptive then dismissing half the team in highschool years when there are fewer other teams to go to and when a player wants to focus on finding a college match, not a new team.

No one is disputing that they're not a top club in the region and will continue to be. However, the fact that they cant assemble a solid GDA team of 2005s when its known they have solid 2005 players that are at World Class ECNL reflects more on GDA than the club itself. These younger ages are where GDA is supposed to pick up steam. It's easy for a 7th grader (2006) to choose to play up a year and play GDA for the novelty but its clear the decision for the 8th graders are becoming more real and are choosing to stay put. The question is what will these 2006s decide in the next two years. This is a microcosm of what's happening to GDA across the US. In the NE its failing miserably.

OW sarcasm guy here :) I agree GDA, especially here in the NE, has not lived up to its promises. Not surprising at all. Just about everyone saw this coming. Keeping poor performers like LISC and Empire and adding Alby an Seacoast isn't going to help improve the disparity between the top maybe 3 clubs and all the rest. Two weeks into a long season is far too early to judge the quality of NYCFC newest teams. Boys and girls, NYCFC has done a very good job with development. But It's yet another support point that GDA is just too big for the level of interest and quantity of talent.

You OW folk are denser than I thought. The discussion is around the success of GDA. Whether its progressing in the right direction. Not U14s in particular, not lop sided scores (although that a symptom of the problem.). Anyone with a brain would look at the younger ages to understand the dynamics, player movement, etc., to measure GDA success. That's where GDA will either gain steam or fail. The older ages are somewhat locked in or grandfathered for lack of a better term and are not as important. The first huge blow to GDA was the exodus of top ECNL teams leaving GDA within its inaugural year. This year its become evident that several NE GDA teams aren't attracting top players from ECNL. OW hasn't from CFC or FSA, NEFC hasn't from Stars or FC Boston and now the top GDA club in the NE (NYCFC) can't field a 2005 team when they have several right next door at World Class. These are all bad signs of continued failure of GDA to progress toward its mission.

They are now because the Sporting 2005's lost a ton this year (to OW, FSA, and Vale). Last year Sporting was a far better team. Well, I guess if you can't train them yourself, you can just offer players on other teams a spot and claim that you trained them. The turnover at OW has begun for the 2005s.

If my kid were interested in DA (she never was and is even less so this year) that would be the only club I'd try to get her into. Even then I'd question the time, cost and sacrifices to play a few good teams in the NE or at national events, vs the majority against non-challenging teams. The training would truly have to be top notch. Did NYCFC do well last year because of the training, or just being a pro club and they could attract better talent?

Trust me, the big club has little to do with the girls side. The training is absolutely better than WCFC ECNL. That is the major reason we joined, that and her HS team really stinks, so playing there for 2.5 months would be a huge waste, but that is our situation only, some others might have different opinions.

They are doing what is right for the kids and their club and are not worried about winning (or losing) 6-2 games.
