But if they're not playing professionally (and many are not) they will still fall behind. Even fi they were with MLS clubs they may still fall behind. We have a big issue with 18-22 year olds. Those amazingly talent players will have every top school drooling over them offering them full rides. That is hard to walk away from for an uncertain career path and low rookie pay. Many of our 18 years olds aren't good enough to land a spot on an international team. Internationally the goal is pro, not college. Abroad if your pro career doesn't go anywhere you can return to school at very little cost. If you make the top tier you're going to make great money vs here.

Great that we left some of our better players down on junior teams where they could excel but we needed them on the senior team and that is a huge jump for which most (if not all) would not be prepared. Practicing 3 or 4 times per week at 15 and up maybe the issue as compared to residential academies going 5 or 6 days per week. Maybe that is where we totally lose it although I still think many top countries are just more fun to watch because their players just get the game. With or without the ball they are making better decisions, better runs, better long balls at more opportune times, better combinations into a through or long ball into and out of heavy traffic with 4 or 5 players involved in nearly every possession. Belgium is really fun to watch as they move the ball so well and have so much vision ..... And they are so unselfish.

Most of the 20s are playing professionally. A good amount overseas.

3 of the top 11 international breakout players are Americans

Here's the USYNT roster from the last U20 WC. There were four players on that team who were playing overseas at the time. Klinsman, Sargent, and Erik Palmer Brown have since moved overseas. So that's seven overseas players. Tyler Adams will go overseas any time now. Not in this team but eligible to play were: Pulisic, McKennie, Weah, Parks

              Roster by Position:
GOALKEEPERS (3): Jonathan Klinsmann (University of California; Newport Beach, Calif.), J.T. Marcinkowski (Georgetown; Alamo, Calif.), Brady Scott (De Anza Force; Petaluma, Calif.)

DEFENDERS (7): Danny Acosta (Real Salt Lake; Salt Lake City, Utah), Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottenham Hotspur FC; Westcliff-on-Sea, England), Marlon Fossey (Fulham FC; Surbiton, England), Justen Glad (Real Salt Lake; Tucson, Ariz.), Aaron Herrera (University of New Mexico; Las Cruces, N.M.), Erik Palmer-Brown (Sporting Kansas City; Lee's Summit, Mo.), Tommy Redding (Orlando City SC; Oviedo, Fla.)

MIDFIELDERS (5): Tyler Adams (New York Red Bulls; Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), Luca De La Torre (Fulham FC; San Diego, Calif.), Derrick Jones (Philadelphia Union; Philadelphia, Pa.), Eryk Williamson (University of Maryland; Alexandria, Va.), Gedion Zelalem (Arsenal FC; Bethesda, Md.)

FORWARDS (6): Jeremy Ebobisse (Portland Timbers; Bethesda, Md.), Lagos Kunga (Atlanta United FC Academy; Tucker, Ga.) Brooks Lennon (Real Salt Lake; Paradise Valley, Ariz.), Emmanuel Sabbi (Unattached; Columbus, Ohio), Josh Sargent (St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri; O'Fallen, Mo.), Sebastian Saucedo (Real Salt Lake; Park City, Utah)

Brady Scott signed with FC Koln. Sabbi plays in Denmark.

                9 of 21 or 43% play overseas. Yeah that's a good amount

What year is that from and were they signed to a pro contract at that point? What level pro league as well? Please factor that in. So many European pros and none of them can help us qualify this year

There were three in the starting lineup for last qualifying game. . Yediin, Pulisic and Wood. Two of which are DAP players. Two MX Liga players (Gonzalez and Villafana)

Two on the bench. Ream and Cameron. That's it. That was part of the issue. This team in qualifying was made up of MLS players. This team was old too.

I am not sure your point.

                          - The US is going with a young roster to build experience

                          - That roster wasn’t supposed to include Pulisic. They gave him the summer off after the Philadelphia game

                          - The roster is heavy on Young Europeans because it’s in Ireland and France

The more interesting rosters will be their friendlies against Italy, England and Brazil
