The transfer fee is more than the entire annual tuition to be at the club? Come on. If it costs $1500 for the year and you are half way through, how could you be charged a fee 10x what you still owe to be released from the contract? That is called usury and it is illegal. Are the brains working? Hello?

It may happen but a club would be foolish to allow it. Not only would it not protect them, it's a sign the parent is a pain in the ***** and is likely to bolt as soon as a new opportunity comes along

Which is it? Pains if they read the contract or pains if they don't? Not sure you are well suited for a service business.

It's a sign the parent is a piece of work and think their sh** don't stink (or their kids' in this case). In not signing it's a clear signal the parent will bolt if they think the next club is better. Also since contracts specify payments a club would want that laid out (unless they're giving the kid a scholarship).

It's not called usury, it is called liquidated damages. Under the law there has to be a verifiable relationship between the amount of liquidated damages and actual damages. No way a club could prove actual damages of 7500, so even if this really exists in any So Fla club contract (which I doubt) it would be unenforceable. So urban myth gets my vote.

omg $7500...did any reader actually believe that? Like you said a club would have to show that they've lost $7500 on their investment in a player. No club could afford to invest that kind of money in any one player let alone multiple players, yet only charge $2500.

Development Academy should be free and inclusive - in order for it to be free and inclusive it must allow for transfer payments for players that earn professional contracts . When a kid enters the Development Academy system at age 12 - the kid and where they play is officially tracked. The professional club that signs that player to a professional contract should receive a reimbursement. USSF should develop a sliding scale with a percentage attached to the number of years that kid spent in the club's development program and then attach a percentage of the value of the contract to be reimbursed to the club.

Yeah good luck with that. MLS clubs are the only ones with the financial means to run free programs and even then some clubs only do it because they have to. Others help pay for it by running expensive camps and RDS programs. There's very little reward for them in the end because salaries and payouts in MLS, especially at the Rookie level, is a pittance. On top of that there are labor laws involved. We are not Europe in terms of structure, regulation, number of clubs, financial backing.

Non MLS clubs cannot afford to give away their product for free unless they are a mega club (very few of those around). And forget GDA being free - ain't ever gonna happen

Certainly is in soccer. At least some other sports have lower cost programs, and/or or the sport still matters in the high school years for kids' to get recognition (football, bball, track). They're not perfect either, but only in soccer and maybe hockey or specialty sports (ice skating, gymnastics) is the cost to play so absurdly high
