The no high school rule will sink this. Plus the high cost.

No high school is a really bad deal.

Nope it's only $2k which includes all hotel and airfare to away games so not expensive and the 24 girls that want this (6 will be riding pine all year) are drinking heavily dosed kool aid to give up their high school lives to someday be a Portland Thorn. Do these GDA coaches have resumes of college player placements they can post online? It's not like ECNL coaches here can tout development either but at least kids can have fun playing JV soccer for the likes of Tigard High while in ECNL. Would be nice to see resumes.

The no high school rule will have little effect on the new girls DA. There will be more than enough talented players who are willing to forego playing crappy high school soccer to fill these rosters.

If a player wants to to play high school than they can stay with their OYSA club team or spend $7K to $10k per year for ECNL, instead of $2k all in for the GDA.

I find it real funny that people are arguing FOR high school soccer since it is considered true recreational level by every college coach. Which is why they don't scout high school games.

You should all be happy, there are more options now than ever before for girls soccer players. If ECNL in Oregon attracted many of the top girls players for $7k to $10k per year, the GDA will have no issue finding good players for only $2k per year.

Asking girls to give up high school is untested. I think it will mean more B teamers.

Plenty of A teamers will give up HS soccer and all other sports/activities. 2k is a steal. Plenty of A teamers will choose not to give up everything for soccer and a bunch of those are wealthy kids that can afford to do what they want. There will also be many A teamers outside the metro area who carry on as usual with local club, high school soccer & multiple sports. Based on historical college placements by Bend, Eugene & Salem, that pathway is doing just fine too.

What posters are overlooking is that they are asking all 24 players to give up HS soccer. It's one thing to give it up when you are a legitimate star player (and they have a few) who will start and play most minutes of every GDA game. But they are mandating players 15-24 give up high school soccer too. Keep in mind the sub rules mean only 14 girls play per game. And the rule saying every player starts 25% of games doesn't prevent them from starting your benchwarmer and pulling her after 5 minutes. There is only one thing that will possibly allow them to fill a roster beyond the top 14 - parents unrealistic expectations. Every parent expects his little Mia to be in the top 3 of the team. Expect massive turnover every year for players 15-24. No one will stay longer than a year to miss out on high school soccer AND spend a year being a practice cone for the real stars.

Again, you donkeys miss the point. It is not a team development academy, it is individually focused. If a player wants to waste time each year playing crummy high school soccer, that is their choice. There will be more than enough girls who are more than willing to not play on their recreational quality high school team.

People also thought not playing high school would be a big deal for the boys, and it hasn't been at all. The majority of the boys academy players have dreams of playing professionally, like most boys high school football and basketball players dream of playing in the NFL & NBA. But, when you speak with them they recognize what a longshot that is.

So, the boys want to play at the highest level they can run right now, and that is in the boys academy. It will be the same for the girls. It may take a year or two, but soon enough the girls DA will have a large selection of the top players. The $2,000 fee practically guarantees it.

The academy will be for B teamers and parents who are deluded.

Why prohibit high school soccer. It is such an important part of most kids childhood to play for your home school. Not a good move at all and pretty mean.

Forcing kids to give up their childhood early is the first step in becoming focused on a pro career.

Believe it or not there are several girls out there who have absolutely no desire to play Rec soccer for their high schools.

Yes! You have to stop thinking like a little kid and man up. Get rid of the dolls and your high school experience and grow the heck up.

Once you hit 13, if you haven't had a good childhood already you missed the boat. Kids worried about the high school experience are not focused enough and should reflect on their priorities. Time to look in the mirror.

But they want to play rec-level soccer in the GDA instead?
