You mean the actual Portland Timbers? This is definitely a down year for them but you can’t win them all. In a couple years they might cycle back around. That’s part of the fun.

Bingo. Follow the money. Nothing will change unless fans stop watching, stop buying tickets and overpriced food & beer.

What you fail to realize is the sky rocketing value of the single entity MLS, not the Portland Timbers attendance or beer sales has made Paulson a genius investor/operator.

SUM (which is a branch of the MLS) has all broadcasting rights for all Soccer activities played in these United States, if people stop watching Soccer worldwide then things will change, things ain't changing. Even if the guys with beards, flannel shirts and tattoos stop drinking cold turkey.

It's akin to getting in early on Apple stock. Unrelated to the sales of the defunct Macintosh computer.

You are celebrating a dude peddling Mcsoccer?

Everyone realizes Paulson has made a bundle off of a publicly owned stadium, in a soccer crazed town, with no summer competition for entertainment dollars.

But the on-field product is so-so (at best), the owner is still a ***** (whether he is a rich one or not doesn't change that one bit). . . and you Timber apologists are sellouts pure and simple.

Irony of course is guys like you hate Trump, but jump on the Paulson bandwagon.

To clarify getting a sweetheart deal from the city to 'exclusively lease' the publicly owned stadium, isn't where he made the money on this MLS franchise buy in (great lease yes) you don't realize a large chunk of ticket sales goes straight to the MLS and all the clubs in the league. With no skin (real estate) in the game when he flips the franchise and sells his spot in the MLS Investor/Operator table, the stadium doesn't come along with it. Which is truly a brilliant business move. Middle man magic.

What happens in Portland, stays in Portland and 20K at games and a regional broadcast deal doesn't move the needle as it relates to the value of the MLS (which is a single entity that is making the investors rich) The other side of the investor coin is the operator and we all get witness it's merely his sh!!t show for giggles. See GW.

You can't seem to understand the reality that there is no stand alone club called: Timbers, Galaxy, Toronto FC, Seattle....The pageantry at matches gives you the illusion that soccer is killing it in P town a wonderful narrative in this deeply layered charade/con.

In the end the franchise value in $$$ comes directly from the single entity MLS.

                No foolin.

                    MLS single entity structure.

                    Worst to 1st is commonplace.

as well as 1st to worst. In just one season. No marquee clubs.

Do some research on this to better understand this un american peculiarity franchise (MLS).

                    The reveal is truly sickening.

What does the structure of MLS have to do with anything.

the team still signs players as they see fit, and have DP's. All sports have a salary cap these days. Doesn't seem to bother the Pats.

You are arguing with a couple of different folks. I don't think Timbers are a real club.

Ticket sales and regional broadcast rights absolutely drive value of franchise: see forbes article https://www.forbes.com/sites/chrissm.../#1e72a55c2ee9

Sweatheart lease also goes with a new owner.

Yes SUM significantly drives franchise value too, one of the many issues with MLS/US Soccer.

But it gets back to - why are you rationalizing the mcsoccer model, particularly when the local version are such *******s?

Maybe instead of posting on this chat room all day the staff should be working on improving the first team? Scouting? Better coaching? Maybe kick back and enjoy one of those $18 draft beers to get the creative juices flowing?

Attendance can help a little bit in the MLS franchise valuation construction. But trust me it's a barely a drop in the bucket compared to the parent LLC MLS valuation which they (clubs) are share in Seattle's high attendance and Dallas's low attendance. All attendances are pooled.

To clarify there is no 'owner' of the Timbers in the real sense, these guys are actually MLS Investor/Operators. Read the contract (city) and see if it's not up for renegotiation if a new MLS Investor/Franchise Operator takes over.

The level of play offered in the MLS is by design. They sell crap and they keep getting richer while the product is horrible. No rationalizing, no one care about the MLS. In this complicated pyramid scheme the next few new franchise buys in at 250million and the value for each investor/operator goes up . Seriously, what do you expect on the field, not figuring in the retired TAM/DP these guys have a hard cap for the entire 20+ Roster of around 4 million dollars.

This blueprint will eventually collapse and actual independent team ownership will have to be part of the fabric of the league world acceptance and promotion/relegation

Amway has nothing on these guys.

That would be a nice perk for staff meetings and would sure liven up the mood. Back in the day a couple of double cocktails at lunch was the norm. A lot of good work got done. That was when you could still smoke in bars and the office. Probably a lot healthier now but where is the fun in that.
