The ethical way to do this is to deliver a superior product to what ECNL has to offer and let the market decide. The sleazy GDA way is to use national team callups as bribery, mostly offering them only to GDA - affiliated players. This is why you see players like the Thorns girl - who didn’t even get an athletic scholarship award to play in college - get a national team callup. Rewarding loyalty and sending a message to ECNL players - GDA is the only way you’ll get a sniff at National camp.
Aside from how gross this is, consumers should be concerned for a variety of reasons. A business that conducts itself this way - imagine what they’ll do if they succeed in running ECNL out of business? And, given the ascension of other nations’ WNT, the USWNT not searching for every worthy player, no matter what initials follow their team name, is heading us down the same road as the MNT. But hey, maybe that’s the plan all along. Can’t b**ch about equal pay if you stop winning.

Many of them played for clubs that are now in ECNL or GDA.
And I'll bet you that none of those clubs got magically better by donning a patch, and if they did, it was solely due to a recruiting advantage, and not due to any technical improvements mandated by the leagues.
