I disagree. When you have the most competitive league how do you keep that edge. We know the success of ECNL is about attracting the most competitive players in the country. Parents complain that the training is what matters but it’s not. Where you start either playing on a town team or a club in another league the end result is to get the best players on one club playing in the most competitive league, ECNL. That means the 1-2% who want to play soccer in college. Of that group now you take the top 1% of the group for this Super group within ECNL. This is ID2 just painted another color and it is to attract the top players to ECNL to play in this top group. Very similar when players who had National team ambitions had to play GDA. This idea of development to learn the skills and technical abilities start at the youngest ages and by the time you get to high school, colleges are looking for athleticism with speed and quickness. That is not development or something you can teach or practice. Either you have it or you don’t.

100% on the above. Kids need to own their recruiting. Not parents. Also, in my experience good clubs take a lead role as well. Parents are involved but never directly with a college coach, that is fatal no no.

I concur as well that players must be in control of their recruiting and not leave it to parents sending recruiting emails to college coaches. Coaches can immediately tell that these “form” emails come from parents. Also, parents think since they pay all this money it’s the club/coach/DOC’s responsibility to get them into a college soccer program. The clubs responsibility is only to put these players in the position to show their talent to colleges. The club/team/league is the vehicle while the player is the one driving the bus. Clubs have to be direct with players/parents about being realistic about colleges. I have seen/heard too many players/parents talk up their dream to play for a P5 conference school but they are not talented enough. Parents/players can’t use the club as an excuse if they take charge of the college process.

The problem is the academies are the ones not being realistic due to business reasons. They sell a lot of the families on D1 college soccer when the reality is that is a real long shot for most. Just false promises to take your money. It’s the name of the game these days.

It’s only a problem if you listen to anyone other than yourself. That’s not an excuse what a club tells you. You cannot sell someone that your daughter is a D1 player just on their word. If your buying then that’s on you. If your daughter is one of the top players you would know. If you take your daughter to college camps/clinics and get feedback that they are interested then you know. If you go to a college showcase and a college contacts you or your daughter that they saw her and are interested then you know. It’s up to you to do your homework beforehand about the club, coaches, DOC before you join a club/team. That’s on you!

What edge? Its not about the most competitive players. never has been, Its about convincing the rest that by playing WITH a few of them they will increase their chances of exposure. Except now, its so diluted that the top players coming out of these leagues is pretty poor. The marketing move is to create a new elite among the so called elite. Nothing really changes other than more games.

Your comment about NT ambitions tells you al thats wrong with it. Play on the field and potential should determine that. They dont because we have a biased flawed ID system. Clubs used the NT as a marketing tool.

There is almost no institutional development because there is no money in it. The money is in competitive games and showcases. Super Cup or whatever is just more of the same.

I laugh at this. Kids need to own their own improvement. The better you are, the easier the recruitment process. The main reason we obsess over recruiting is because the kid is not good enough.

You are correct, so instead of focusing on getting better some kids that need major work think that just by joining team/club xyz gets them there. Thousands of $$$ later and major time spent they find out the promises used to hook them in were just talk.

This is purely a development program. A pathway for the best players to the national teams. I wonder how it will impact the HS season.

its another pathway away from WNT. instead of adding training, they are adding another competition. more time in the car, less time on the ball, working on weak food or first touch.

ECRL would actually benefit from it since the top 1 or 2% might actually be good enough for an ECNL team IF they lived in the right area.
