Advice is have your kid apply to their top SCHOOLS and hope for a walk on spot. D1s were wrapped up ages ago, even more so any money spots. There's may be a few D2 and D3 stragglers left. If they had been talking to coaches but aren't getting anywhere your kid should have at least applied Early Action to show the coach how interested they are in the school. If your kid gets in they might give you a spot but know they were never a top recruit for the program. Most EA and ED applications were already due.

Don’t listen to a coach saying “don’t worry”. You need to be pro-active and figure out your own plan. You can’t rely on the coaches-at the end of the day, they don’t care much and a new crop of kids are right around the corner.

I agree with most of what you say- my experience has been mixed with college coaches
As you say some don’t care but others do
But you are 100% right about the “don’t worry” part- this is a business deal and you need to treat it exactly that way- you need commitment from them and they need it from you
So until they offer you keep dealing
And don’t feel bad about anything it’s business

A lot of schools cut soccer and other “secondary sports” - it was actually on 60 minutes today. Apply to your favorite schools and try for a walk on. Training between now and summer will be everything.

Men’s sports are taking the brunt of all the cuts.

Yes and it's the less popular sports. So far only two men's D1soccer teams have been cut - but there were already 100 fewer men's D1 teams than women's because of Title 9. There will be more cuts this year. Lots of men's swimming, golf, tennis etc. Definitely some women's teams too, again less popular. Women's soccer will be fine because it’s one of the most popular female sports and is an easy way to hit Title 9.

I saw that 60 Minutes segment last night. It really is gross the way schools fawn all over football. That U MN gymnastics program costs pennies to run but the football coach gets paid over $4M a year.

When is the last time the D1Gymastics had networks fighting, willing to spend millions of dollars to broadcast their sport? Nice try Mary Lou, but these coaches deserve the salary based on what it does for their schools.

In that story thr men's gymnastics team had a proposal to be self-sustaining but the school wouldn't even consider it. How many of those gymnasts are good students, contribute to the betterment of the university in some way, bring in the trophies or Olympic notoriety vs a typical football player? School budgets are so bloated and while some athletic department cuts may be warranted, cutting the smaller teams will not get them to where they need to be.

Soccer is another non revenue sport that could get cut. Women's teams will remain because of Title 9. Men's teams have a decent chance because of soccer's popularity but if I had a male rower, swimmer, golfer or tennis player I'd start talking with them about club sports. Even with football and basketball it's the power programs that get the obscene revenue while lesser programs don't get squat. Before Covid some football programs were cutting scholarships to ease some of the budget pressure and give AD's some flex in cutting a female sport here or there. (I think Central CT did also?). Basketball at lease doesn't cost as much to run.

Not plenty of time. First thing. Call and email all your coaches and assistant coaches and teams your interested in. Then do it again. Send them your resume, highlight film and whatever soccer awards and tournaments you've been in. And your great grades and SAT and ACT scores if you have them. Be aggressive. And let them know you are applying there . Most players now committed were recruited and lucky enough to find a team that wasn't completely screwed up by covid affecting their budgets and roster spot availability. And then there is always a walk on tryout and intramurals as a last resort. Its 2020. Very sad what it did to these kids soccer hopes. Let alone everything else covid did. Committing in this environment was hard and those that did the coaches had targeted for a while .Some coaches were told by the AD to hold off on filling spots till they got a better handle on holdovers and finances. Its sucks out there. Don't give up but remember theres only so many roster spots and this year a lot less than normal

Coaches were telling the 22's that there was plenty of time. Those spots that coaches called about on 6/15 are filled, so anyone who believed the coaches and waited for the dead period to end is SOL.

It really is too late for 21s, maybe a lone spot here or there and just at low level programs. EA and ED applications are done, regular decision apps around Jan1-Feb 1.

22s as you said better hustle. This would have been their prime time this year regardless of Covid so even though showcases aren't happening that doesn't mean they shouldn't be putting in the effort.

For 21s and 22s there will be fewer spots because of deferrals and 5th year players. If ever it was important to make sure you're targeting right, it's now. If that means too much compromise on the soccer or school then consider trying for a walk on or club teams. In the end it's the school that matters the most.

Spot on, many parents or kids are afraid to ask the tough questions, the college coaches and assistants will tell you the truth. Are you interested in me? Is your class full? Do you have room to add at my position? Do my grades quality? Can you help me get into the school? Can I be a preferred walk on? 21/22 kids not committed want to blame their club/coaches, but in the end if your not being actively recruited or committed by now, it is now time to be aggressive and get to the yes/or no as quickly as you can so you can find a spot, might not be at a school you want to attend, but then at least you know your options. You are not a recruited athlete, you are recruiting them. Be bold and make the calls and quit blaming others. These coaches aren’t in the business of leading kids on.
