If you're genuinely struggling to afford it, stay local in a cheaper league and use the savings for tutors and test prep. Not all D1 schools are as strong academically as many D3s. Not many players here have the soccer chops for the soccer programs that are also tops academically (like a Stanford). If lower D1 or strong D3 is the goal then being in the "top" league is less of a necessity. Look at rosters at target schools to see where current players came from.
One thing for sure is good grades open a lot more doors. Coaches like knowing you won't struggle academically or that they won't have to ask for admissions office favors
