Bolts U14 are ranked in the top 20 in the nation.

"Fall off in quality of play" compared to what? Last year's U14s? Last year's pre-academy? What is the point of reference?

This is based on pre-academy which had many weak teams last year - most of the good 2000s were playing up. This year those same 2000s are on the U14 teams and this team will struggle against PDA, Red Bulls, Revs, BW Gottshee. Here is some free advice to make this team better. Note: I have no skin in this. Just a coach who checked out a couple of their games last season.

              1) They need to get better at passing from the back. Their defenders are good at winning the ball (tackles, ball in the air) but when they have the ball they make bad decisions like passing to a crowded area when the other side of the field has much more space. So they end up losing the ball and spend more time defending than distributing the ball in a smart way to create more attacking opportunities.

              2) Midfielders need to be smarter: Some of their midfielders turn and pass back too much when there are forward options where they are facing!

              3) They play a 4-3-3 but in reality it's a 4-3-1 (they don't make enough use of the wide forwards) and rely too much on the striker who has trouble finishing.

              I wish them good luck.

In what way are the kids hurting? And... just so you know... it's the middle of September now... the wait is almost over!

two years ago....you can't get better if you don't play competitive games and just practice..Colleges don't do it, top DAP team don't do it..

                    Wrong..
The academies follow what US soccer mandates. They want players to practice more and have less but more competitive games. They also want the kids to have time to recover after games. Prevents injuries from over use.
The college game is horrible for the most part. A lot of big fast players playing kick ball at almost every level.
My guess is that your son plays for Valeo who believe that the kids need to play in every tournament and almost every day. These kids have a good chance for injury and burn out. IMO

Top 20 in a league that no one plays in. Good luck against real teams

Not that I put much faith in rankings, but the rankings are not dependent on the leagues in which the teams play. That is to say that ranked teams are from a variety of leagues.

The other poster lives in a world of Gotsoccer rankings. Enough said

Email the coach. Won't do any good posting advice here

Agree. Sounds like good advice but doubt if their new coach reads this blog.
