I assume it is a teacher & staff issue. Unions fighting to keep schools closed. Maybe the older & ones with health issues retire and make way for next generation.
We all knew it was a matter of time, especially after NY and MA announced. Our HS isn't having finals either.
I feel bad for seniors having to go through this farcical academic last quarter = no proms, graduations etc. A big whomp whomp for them, along with uncertainty about college in the fall.

Unions had a valid case that since NY and MA - who we are supposed to be operating in conjunction with - aren't reopening then why should CT? We still have case rates similar to our neighbors. Eighty-five percent of the US already called it for the year; we were one of a final hold outs.
Time to move on to figuring out how to handle next year
It's not just about students but faulty, staff and the broader community. None of those groups live in a bubble and all interact with one another regularly

Yes there are a lot of 80 year old faculty members....sheep
Just saying it's not as easy as just saying "kids will be fine." There's a much bigger picture to consider and educators are trying to figure it all out. It's still the beginning of May, plenty of time to plan for different scenarios. No one wants schools to stay closed, especially parents. But neither do educators - they know distance learning is a piss poor substitute and isn't sustainable long term.

Look at the data. it is not just kids that will be fine. We are all on lockdown because people older than 80 are dying.

Plenty of teachers are in the age ranges to still be sickened by Covid, even hospitalized. Ages 24-64 make up 60% of all cases. Doesn't mean they'll die in huge numbers, but they do get sick. Plenty of teachers have comorbidity issues as well
