    College Recruiting

If your son is a rising 11th grader and is getting repeated camp invites from d1 schools is he just part of a big email blast or is there interest?

Also are things parents should know different by position? Striker vs Keeper etc?

What kind of camps are you talking about? Week residential type camps or collegiate ID Camps?

Everyone gets those at that age. They get emails from got soccer or if your team has a profile sheet they are giving out.

If you have to pay for a camp visit / id camp you are not wanted. You need a campus visit or special invite.

I don't think, unless a D1 program is really hard up for players, they are going to send out those types of invitations to a massive amount of players. Chances are your son may have been ID'd somewhere along the way most likely at a tournament.

I would suggest he make a list of 8-10 schools he'd like to visit and go to their ID Camps. As he gets older, that list can be cut to other schools depending on different factors.

8-10 ID camps at $450-600 each, possibly with airfare added on, good luck with that.

Many are small (75-100) and under $350. But there is travel too. Are keepers in big demand?
How can you really tell if there is a chance for some minutes as a freshman?

Fact is, many/most are probably money makers. But not all. What we have done is for each invite we assessed the likelihood that this school sent the invite based on something they saw and liked or whether we just ended up on a mailing list. It is very important to weed through these and try to determine which ones make sense to go to.

First thing you need to do is talk to your club coach and ask him what level you should be targeting. D1 is to general. There are different tiers so it is important to know what tier your player belongs to. Then when you get an invite you can assess whether the school is realistic.

Then you need to find out for each invite, what prompted it? Was it an email you sent to the coach? Was it that they came to a showcase game and liked what they saw? Or did they simply get your info and now you are on their mailing list. Talk to your teammates. Find out what invites they are getting. Try and assess how selective your invite is. Find out if they saw you play. Your coach will probably have a list. You can also call the college coach. Find out if they actually saw you play. Ask how many invites they sent. Those schools who only sent a small amount (approx 30 is a good number) are the ones we have found are the ones that already watched me and liked me. Going to these camps has been very beneficial. The talent level for the most part is good and most players seem to be pretty much at a similar level. The coaches always seem to give feedback which is very valuable.

The money makers on the other hand....well we haven't actually gone to any. But teammates have and they basically leave feeling that they weren't watched at all and wasted their time and money. Don't think that you are the diamond in the ruff and they will find you. Because they really aren't looking. Most schools invite a select group of players to these camps and they focus on THEM. That is why the smaller camps are much better. You definitely get seen. But the others....you may find yourself on the bottom field with coaches that aren't affiliated with the school.

Good luck. Be smart and choose which camps you attend wisely.

We do not go to any ID camps unless we know

go to clinics where your kid has an interest in the school. if it is a serious interest, let the school know you are coming before you get there. otherwise, they won't know to look. we've found day clinics are the best; again, go to where you have an interest in the school. fill out the questionnaires before you go too. whoever said frosh don't play doesn't know beans. these camps are money makers, but they can be important too. you don't get official invite (paid) until senior year. if they are paying for you to come before that, it is wrong. going before senior yr is unofficial visit. they can give you tickets to their games, stuff like that, but nothing more. you can only have I think 5 official visits between d1 and d2 also.

Thanks. This is very helpful. When marketing should a player do anything different based on position Striker vs MF vs Def vs Keeper?

A player should express a positive attitude and willingness to play at any position a college program and coaching staff needs.

Some players end up at positions they didn't play pre-college.

A player unwilling to fill a different position may well limit her/his opportunities.
