Only problem with that is you have to play golf which is not much of a sport.

They can visit a college at any time, either on a regular school tour or an "unofficial visit." Just not any official visits until Sept 1 of junior year. Before this change official visits weren't until senior year yet plenty of players still found ways to commit well before that. Players can talk to coaches, just not about recruiting good luck enforcing that). Clubs can also act as intermediaries. The changes just happened so the latest official commits were really solidified before the rule change last spring. In another year or two you're still going to see a flurry of commitments Sept 1 by juniors. How did that happen if they haven't had "official" visits or recruiting discussions? All the ways listed above.

I know plenty of males and females getting very nice packages to play. if you're half way decent you can get money. There's much less competition for spots vs the more popular sports.

Ok...that is fine but there is a reason for that. Kids want to play other sports in much larger numbers then the ones interested in golf. Why even compare golf with soccer? Have your soccer loving kid spend their childhood playing golf so they can try to get a scholarship? If they don't like it they won't be very good and the facts show that not many of them care to play it

I know kids that row crew to try to get a crew scholly...also much more available statistically.

The reality is that soccer is a blast to play. You would not know it reading the whining and complaining on here but the players adore it. That explains its popularity, not that race to try to get a college placement.

You are partially right. Both “official” and “unofficial” visits, as defined by the NCAA, cannot happen until Sept 1 of your Junior year for NCAA DI schools. What you are talking about, where you visit on your own and don’t meet with the coach, is different and not defined by the NCAA, and therefore can be done anytime because it is in no way related to athletics.

So nothing has really changed, and there will always be a flurry of commits every Sept 1 for Juniors.

Oh so no visits with the coaches until September 1 of the junior year. On September 1, the juniors will be getting lots of calls from coaches to come visit their colleges, but the fall schedule is very busy for D1 coaches.

No what you'll see is lots of juniors committing September 1, especially the top ones. How do you think that happens without conversations ahead of time? Anyone can visit a school at any time and go on regular tours. There's still loopholes and they will be used, including using clubs as intermediaries, players can attend on campus ID events at any time but just can't talk about "recruiting" (enforceable?) and players can call coaches at any time, not just the other way around.

It's a band aid that doesn't really have any substance. More needs o be done but supposedly they're voting on more initiatives in the spring

It won't happen. Other sports would demand the same and schools don't want to spend more on sports, especially non revenue sports
