US National League Vegas Showcase **CANCELED**

    Date: March 10, 2020

To: All USYS National League Teams Participating in Las Vegas Soccer Showcase

From: Dr. Pete Zopfi, Chair, USYS Skip Gilbert, CEO, USYS Cc: USYS National Office, USYS Board

Subject: 2020 Boys & Girls USYS National League Las Vegas Soccer Showcases Canceled

Given heightened air travel concerns, and with the health of our soccer community in mind, the 2020 USYS National League Soccer Showcase in Las Vegas, NV for boys and girls has been canceled. The decision has been made in accordance with the guidance of public health and medical professionals as well as the ongoing acceleration of the coronavirus in communities from which our soccer families reside. As the number of state emergencies increases, we have decided to exercise caution in the interest of our soccer family. “We understand and share the disappointment with our players, coaches and families,” USYS Chair, Dr. Pete Zopfi said. “Regrettably, the air travel environment, and related information and recommendations presented to us from public health authorities and medical professionals have convinced us that this is the most prudent decision.” We’d like to thank all of our USYS National League families, staff and volunteers, for your ongoing support of USYS as we manage our programming given the current health and travel environment. The safety and security of our soccer community is, and always will be, our highest priority. Please note, all policies regarding USYS activities are subject to change based on the ongoing review of circumstances. Further details regarding the impact of coronavirus on USYS programming will continue to be shared via official USYS communications channels.

Other leagues are going to start cancelling spring events. If you are a junior still trying to get recruited this spring you are justifiably very worried right now. ID event cancellations will soon follow as schools try to limit who is on campus - if they stay open at all. Sophomore recruiting will get pushed well into junior year. Only hope is if all of a sudden things start to quiet down. But based on experiences in other countries we are only just ramping up.

The Player's Showcase is still on and they are trying to implement the National League teams that still want to play into that showcase. Time will tell but that's a big task to try and inject all of those teams into a showcase. Those teams would also need to be placed into the highest possible bracket or I fear they would run through the field like butter as well.

No reason to worry as everyone is in the same boat. The timeline just gets paused for all.

actually it is a huge problem- the NCAA is discussing spring season cancellations
which brings into question eligibility and available scholarship money for 5th years, incoming freshmen and scholarship limits

this years High school seniors could face the reality of losing their spring HS seasons and no available scholarship budget their freshman year

also what about the NLI- its a contract -

Looking just at soccer here's the issue: spring events cancelled and spring and summer ID events cancelled or greatly scaled back. Come fall coaches are in season with little to no time to do meet and greets or attend events. There normally aren't many fall events but maybe the leagues will push spring events to then. Again, will coaches be able to go? Current sophomores will get pushed back but it's still manageable. Remaining juniors with any traction now better lockup fast. If you were hoping for a final spring/summer push you are understandably sweating bullets

The original point was about current juniors. They’re all in the same boat now. No reason to panic. College coaches still need to lock up recruits from the class of 2021. It’s just a pause button being pressed for that class.

No need for sweating bullets, relax, they’ll be fine (2021 recruits).

With spring and possibly summer events off there is little time to wrap up 2021s. Less time to do school visits etc. Spots will be filled because they have to be, but now it's very compressed.
That increases the odds of regrets later on.

Fair enough. My point was simply that all 2021’s are in the same situation and spots will need to be filled, it will only happen later.

Yes, and since coaches have already been watching the 2021's, they may have to make imperfect decisions based on the information they have now (that is, not seeing players as much as they would have liked). Everyone is in the same boat, coaches and players. It will sort itself out.

if a lot of next year freshmen redshirt-it becomes a big problem for the current jrs
especially since everyone keeps saying that the 2020s are a better class than the 21s
colleges want to get their 4 years

                            we shall see

All aren't in the same spot. If you've locked in already, as many have, you're golden.
