As an aside: It is one of the big knocks against American soccer that we allow too many subs (at older ages) so kids do not learn how to play the game the way it is supposed to be played. It does change the game when everyone can run around until they get tired -- sub off and rest, and then come back in.

At a youth level you will be playing 25 or 30 minute halves. No problem. It will be fun as long as you can field a full team. Communication among coach and parents is key so someone can help out with a ride, or if absences are going to mean a player is needed from another team to fill in, the coach needs to know as soon as possible.

    Have fun.
It's always a balance between having too few or too many. Have too few and you risk not being able to field a full team and players getting exhausted. Have too many and not enough players get good playing time. It also depends on the level of play and the commitment from families. If everyone is highly committed and shows up all the time then fewer subs are fine. As teams get older, especially at the HS level, there's a much higher risk of losing players to injury
