Students participating in soccer games or practices would explicity be permitted to wear protective headgear as long as it meets federal standards, under redrafted legislation approved Thursday morning by the Education Committee.
The bill is based on legislation (H 1075) filed by Rep. Chris Walsh, D-Framingham, at the request of constituent Robert Edwards. Rep. Tom Sannicandro, D-Ashland, also is listed as a cosponsor.
The bill describes its goals as preventing concussions and saving taxpayers expenses incurred in the state Medicaid program.
The committee also approved a redraft of legislation (H 1939) sponsored by Rep. Christopher Markey, D-Dartmouth, that requires school committee representatives active in Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) activities to annually report all financial matters regarding post-regular season events, including contracts, salaries and gratuities.
Under a third bill endorsed by the committee, school committees would be required to credit American Sign Language courses toward the satisfaction of foreign language requirements.
