The destruction began when they started forcing all travel teams, no matter what level, to use club provided paid trainers. First it was Coastal, then Champion, then Red Bull and then LIPS. The first two training companies were incompetent because they used imported British trainers with little or no experience. The last two were a bit more competent but sachem was getting the training organizations leftovers, not their top trainers, and they often failed to have enough trainers to cover all teams. If you were the B team and wanted to go to a tournament, you had to pay for the club trainer hundreds of dollars yet you would be lucky if they showed up to a game or two.

There were other issues too. For example, it didn't help club morale that the teams that had kids whose parents were board members exempted themselves from the club trainer mandate, in effect forcing these high costs on others while continuing to use parent-coaches and outside trainers themselves.

They also had an issue where the 3 or 4 best teams in the club had been using KK trainers, sometimes in addition to the mandated club trainers, and one day one of the Sachem board members had a fit and banned the KK members from the field, which led to all of those teams leaving the club.

The final straw were Sachems field problems. When the school district jacked up the costs from a few hundred a month to $18,000 a month, Sachem had to partner with a lacrosse organization which saw many of the soccer teams getting only 2 or 3 home games a season, yet registration fees went through the roof to help cover the field costs.

Put it all together and you have a high cost, low results club. LIPS openly pulling Sachem players over to Smithtown is actually doing those players a favor, giving them a chance to play on decent teams.

We play in Smithtown and our "A" team is looking to move out of Smithtown due to LIPS. They are disorganized, run amateurishly. We have 10 out of 15 players looking to move for the fall.... when you talk to the board or Tommy at LIPS, you are just dismissed. A bunch of lazy people. Maybe they cared once, now they just keep building additions onto their homes from all the money that the teams are paying LIPS that he kicks back...average we are paying them $ 500-800 a month.. figure we have 6 teams in our age group boys and girls. --$3000 on the low side times that by roughly 10 age groups- Minimum Tom Lipps is hauling in is $30k.... back out the half he actually pays the trainer and he is pocketing $15K as a side job with no overhead. This doesn't take into account other camps and training they do. I could justify the expense if you had a say over who is your trainer, not just someone they stick you with.

There are still a couple of clubs around that don't force club trainers on teams. Connetquot and Ronkonkoma are two that I can think of off-hand. I think VOB too.

Sh*t just hit the fan at stony brook

So bad that most board members don't go to kids home games to avoid parents. Multiple board members have taken their child to other clubs. Lots of infighting on the board. They lost control of the fields to SBU because they failed to maintain them. The fields have turned in to ankle breakers. Only a matter of time before they are kicked off completely. Not a good situation.

At least one Stony Brook team is openly advertising that all you have to do to make their team is to go online and register. They are literally taking players sight unseen.

Saw it on BOTN a few days ago. The ad basically said (paraphrasing here) that if you were interested, go online and register.

They are also posting they need coaches. Some BS about expanding. Nobody is running to Stony Brook.
