We've gone (and I'm talking about US soccer culture in general here, not any specific club) from a _Chariots of Fire_ mentality, where soccer players ARE trained more or less like distance runners, to a "no need to train without the ball, you get all the exercise you need playing and working on skills". The truth, to the extent we know it accurately, does depend on age and skill--and there are quite a few conditioning drills that are useful for soccer players (and the sorts of things that can't be done with a soccer ball). Eight-mile runs aren't among them, but ladder exercises, repeated sprints, and all sorts of other things are useful. (As is participation in other sports).

Speaking now of Westside--a key component of Taihuichi (and Westside) is sand training. Some beach running, some agility drills conducted on the beach, beach soccer (scrimmages and skills exercises), and yes, climbing the dune at Cape Kiwanda. And guess what? This sort of training is actually scientifically justified--the softer surface causes additional muscle groups to be exercised compared to running on turf or pavement, and reduces impacts on the muscles and bones, lessening recovery time. Since it requires a drive to the coast, it doesn't happen very often (once or twice a year, generally), but it's a quite useful way to train.

Let’s just suppose that your thoughtful response is in fact accurate and supported by science.
The difficulty I’m having with your position goes to both frequency and legacy.
How long will the effectively of simply training under this method out at the coast last?
Once you do this for a week, will the muscle memory and the endurance and any other benefit last until your next session six months later? Or will the benefits wane fairly quickly, like within weeks? In my experience, the latter will be the rule.
So while it’s very possibly a good thing (the Westside method), it isn’t a good thing if it isn’t applied consistently.

It's 2018. Why are we talking about Taihuichi.

Someone one brought it up to criticize Westside?

Its about to be spring break - give the guy a break for mailing it in. Will any of these teams actually have full rosters anyway?
I'm surprised they didn't move these to last Sunday or in April.

WashT seems to have trouble containing big burly forwards; AJS should get a goal or two.

It depends on who shows up for Crossfire. If they get their full roster, in particular their big back line, they can compete with FC. If they're off playing hoops again, then Crossfire's D becomes suspect.

running in sand makes you batter at running in sand, running long distance makes you better at running long distances. Neither of them will help much with the short sprints and directional changes needed in soccer.

That said, running in sand will make your legs stronger, which will in turn make you more explosive. Doing it once a year won't do much of anything

It should be noted that even the little DA clubs, that train 3-4 times a week, still have formal training of about 5-8 hours/week. (Timbers Academy probably has a bit more than that--but it's still something that kids do in the evening after school).

Compare that to a full-time or residential program, whether something like IMG in the US (or one of the better MLS academies), or a European pro academy, or even (since it got mentioned) Taihuichi, where prospects are being trained all day, as their primary activity.

With a large training time budget, one can have ample time to both work on skills and on physique (including all aspects of physical development). With the limited time available to club soccer, how this should be divided is an interesting question.

I say great job by FC coaches developing the boys in different positions!
FC is not known for developing players and moving them around in different positions. So the fact that they did this for one game against a weak ET team in the second half only means zilch. FC is a mess. Coaches leaving in drothes and development in the ****ter. Clive would be so disappointed.

It isn't done once a year, when you continue to have a work ethic. BTW, sprints and directional changes with and without the ball are included in training.
