Again off topic...it's about ***c club doc ability to both monitor coach and player development...only to follow wealthy parental suggestions...and haphazardly choose vg...big mistake for this age group...when will the members come first?

It's so entertaining to watch all of the Timbers-Victor-Sunny drama, can't wait for the next chapter in the story.

Completely agree with you. ***C will be losing players, due to lack of focus on both player and coach (not parent coach) development, another Sunny "well thought out" decision which occurs at all levels at the club now-greens, forest, burgundy too! I implore the board, GM to develop a code of ethics and start turning this around before it is too late.

If those same couple of parents now complain about VG, at least Sunny can say they got what they asked for so maybe Sunny played it right after all ?

Problem?
Garen is a good coach his ideas are very crisp and forward thinking, as for his team dynamic then we start to see a few creaks, certain players were given a break while others were held to a higher standard. They were 13 yr old and some couldn't understand why some boys got away with more than others.
It wasn't about playing time it was about holding all players accountable for their actions. There were meeting in December last year about problems within the team, so it wasnt out of the blue like people keep trying to tell on here, the players that were going to look for positions on other teams had spoken to Garen about their feeling after the last cup game. Thats why there are tryouts so players that didnt feel comfy can move else where.
Im not sure the right move was made both coaches have their merits and downfalls, they play very different types soccer, but I do feel that their were too many boys on the team that felt like they had a given right to be on the team sheet each and every week while some felt that no matter what they did they would always be to blame for the teams short comings.
I guess time will tell as to whether the change is for the better, but please lets work from the facts not none know stories, there is plenty of gossip on this board and as we know not all coaches are liked by all parents but there is no need to become vindictive as all we really want is for these boys to become good men and maybe one are two along the way might make a living out of playing soccer.

This was very well said, although I do disagree a few things.
I have been reading this board since Victor was named the Reds coach. I debated on staying anonymous but I would like to come forward.
My name is Kathleen and my son Luke was the ONLY returning reds player that Victor cut. I would like to tell you our side of the story from our perspective. I am not trying to be vindictive or spread rumors. I just wanted people to know that my 14yr old son was a causality of this coaching conflict.
We were notified of Garen's departure the day before kick arounds. We were shocked. We knew that a couple of parents were upset at the end of the fall season with Garen but we had no idea of what was happening. I was impressed on how quiet the unrest was kept. I don't know who the parents were and have no idea what the specific problems were. The parents kept it to themselves. My husband and I had liked Garen and thought he was a good fit for Luke. Luke is a very introverted boy. He doesn't like to have attention brought to him. He doesn't want people to know that he is trying hard or that he cares. He acts like nothing bothers him but I know they do. Garen understood this and tried to bring Luke out of his shell. I saw Luke blossom last year and was quite happy on how the season turned out.
The night of tryouts we received a call from Jason offering him a spot on the greens. We were very surprised and did not expect this outcome. We immediately called Sunny to find out what had happened. Luke has been a starter on the reds for the past 3 years. He has made the RTC team for the past 2 years. This year he made the tournament alliance team for RTC that competed at Starfire in February. In March he was invited by RTC to the tournament in Eugene to try out for the state team, although Luke did not make it. Luke was also recommended for the ID 2 training. He was 1 of 3 boys that Garen recommended for the ID2 training. Only 1 of the boys were invited to the training and Luke wasn't the one. I believe Luke has been an asset to the reds as not only being one of the fastest boys but also contributing with his many assists to goals and scoring at least one goal. So with his resume we were surprised that he didn't make it. Sunny stated that Victor did not think he performed well at tryouts. So we asked Sunny that since Victor only evaluated the boys for 45min doesn't all what he has done show Victor he should be on the team. Honestly I wasn't watching that closely at Luke's performance but what I did see he was playing well. I did see Luke make an impressive overlapping run from defense to shooting at the 18 yard line just missing the goal by hitting the far sided goal post so I'm not sure what Victor saw. I noticed it because when Luke turned around to run back to his spot on defense he practically ran Victor over. I guess the writer of the last message would say that Luke was one of the boys "that felt like they had a given right to be on the team sheet" Of course I disagree because Luke was trying really hard at tryouts and knew that he didn't have a guaranteed spot on the team. I don't believe that Luke's performance at tryouts was so sub par that he should have been cut espcially compared to his teammates performances.
The next thing we did was call Garen. I was thinking maybe Luke isn't as good as we thought even though he had made all these extra teams. I was not expecting to hear what Garen had to say. Apparently there have been parents who complained to Garen all year about my son. They complained that Luke wasn't putting in enough effort and should be benched. Apparently there is a video of one of our games that a parent complained the whole time about Schoene. To this I do agree. Luke doesn't put as much effort
as he should. In games, Luke gets frustrated and tends to give up and we have been trying to get him more motivated to push through and prove his worth. Luke had been benched several times and he talked with Garen about why. I didn't see Garen playing favorites with Luke but I guess other parents did. Luke never had anything bad to say about his teammates. Not once did he complain about anything related to his teammates only about having to play soccer in the pouring down rain. I believe this lack of trying should have been addressed between the player, coach and player parents.
Garen would not tell me who the parents were and refused to discuss what happened with him leaving the club. I respected that and left it alone.
I have an idea about which parents were involved. I believe that these parents were instrumental in getting rid of Garen as the coach and bringing Victor into the club. I believe they probably did discuss their concerns and opinions about the players which influenced Victor's decision on who to put on the team. I wouldn't be so defensive if other players were cut but my son being the only one makes the situation really odd. I felt he was targeted. Several parents had come over to my husband and I and told us that they were shocked Luke wasn't on the team and that Victor made the wrong decision. They were hoping to see Luke brought back up to where he should play by the beginning of the season.
My hope for Luke for this season is to become a leader on the greens and to show Victor that he deserves to be on the reds. I want to prove to Victor that he should have made his own decisions about players and not to listen to the parents. These parents should have trusted Victor's coaching ability.
Watching Victor at practice I'm not sure as parents we would let him get pulled up. Luke is very sensitive and I'm not sure he can handle Victor's degrading.
I'm not sure if the complaining parents intent was to get Luke cut from the team but they are the ones who have to live with the consequences of their words. I'm not sure what this actually teaches their sons if they felt their sons "couldn't understand why some boys got away with more than others."
When talking to Luke he says, Mom I love the game and all I want is to play soccer. I love watching my son play and in the end what matters most is my son's happiness!
I know this is quite long and I appreciate you taking the time to read it. I have been very upset since tryouts and have done my share of crying. I also have had lots of sleepless nights thinking about this. I have said my peace and I am done talking about this.
Good luck to both teams this season. See you on the pitch.
Thanks,
Kathleen Schoene

To the poster immediately above (K). I also know the story you are telling and I think most of what you wrote is accurate, except that your boy was not the only one in that situation.
As far as the evaluations go, most of us who have been around soccer long enough know that they are not as fair as they want the parents to think. In almost every case, the roster is determined ahead of time and the tryout is just for show. I heard from people who went to this team's tryouts and it was 100% the case that the new coach knew who he wanted before going in. I heard from many people that he selected some boys that were not on the existing team but that he personally knew from another club that he is works with. If he only spent 45 minutes looking at the boys like you wrote then you know that it was fixed.
Garen is a great coach that doesn't put up with too much crap. He ran into parents that also are used to getting their way. Too bad for everyone involved.

At the end of the day, know and trust this; your son is better off NOT playing for VG. I watched him at SCFC when he was there a number of years ago and we were certain of one thing: we would never have allowed him to coach our son. You and your son will see that you guys will be better off.

Based on past history, your son MIGHT get a partial scholarship to Corban University or Concordia......but not making a living, unless it's selling peanuts in the stands. That's reality.
I wonder which delusional parent on the Reds you are, hmm I think I can take a pretty accurate guess. Odds are it's 1 in 3.
