And all they've been able to do is make it worse. Just like the Timbers in Oregon...

Their success is based on athleticism. The USWNT has some of the top athletes in the country where other countries did not. Now you have other countries starting to field top athletes....combine that with top training methods and now you have a USWNT that is behind.
Wait a minute, I thought athleticism had nothing to do with success in soccer??? You lemmings on this chat board said that technical dribbling through and around cones was what made a great soccer player and team. Now you got me all confused

The reason the women's program is struggling is the rest of the world is catching up to it--not because of any change in training for American girls. (And it's something that we, the defending world champs in women's soccer, are concerned about the health of the program only two years out from winning the WC).

But I'm sure you've got a club and a program that will single-handedly Fix Everything That Is Wrong With American Soccer, if we just put you in charge and got rid of the money-grubbing coaches and bureaucrats that are obviously holding the program back. Right?
But wait - I thought DA was going to fix everything?

Ten years and we've barely moved the dial. The best young talent to emerge recently, Pulisic, didn't follow a traditional DA path. Other young players are bailing, or at least trying to bail, and go abroad. International players increasingly take top college roster spots. It's about leadership and coaching. A small country like Iceland can emerge on the world stage in seemingly little time, and it's all driven by leadership and coaching. We have very little of both.

USSF wants 1) control 2) money. In that order.

The goal is to make money. They don't care about anything else.

In women's soccer usa has some of the best athletes on the planet and it makes them relevant until they are asked to think, find solutions with the ball & d play the game. Outrunning, jumping and tackling weaker females with better skills does have a ceiling, but has done the trick for decades in at the college level. See Anson Dorrance. Just like American Football for boys/men it's all based on athletic ability. That's how our country rolls.

Remember this crucial aspect that Iceland has no competition from other sports. Try being relevant on the Men's side of sports in the USA with the unbridled passion, commitment, participation and tv/advertising dollars for Football, Basketball & Baseball. Soccer has never had or ever will have a seat at the table, just a place for food cart junkies. When we do have a kids with the requisite talent to relevant at the world level it's best they go abroad, which is common sense. American high level coaches have no desire to gravitate to the sport of Soccer.

So US Soccer wants to get involved with women and take the fun and the quality out.
US Soccer is the Walmart of soccer. Only out to make money. They will lower the quality on women's side.

They will take all the joy out of the game which will have a negative effect.

US Club's efforts with 80 or so clubs across the country for girls has made money, showcased some outstanding players, played a layered and exhaustive competitive schedule all in an effort to cater to lazy women's collegiate coaches. Cattle call is over US Soccer rang the bell. Time for change has arrived.

50% of all women on earth who play soccer are in the US. With that kind of numbers advantage any country would be able to dominate a sport simply because they can find athletes who are more dynamic. That numbers advantage is starting to dwindle, and there's no chance the men's side will ever approach those numbers even if soccer became the sport of choice here. The 'find better athletes' doesn't work when other countries have similarly athletic players who are technically and tactically ahead of ours.

The women's team is finally starting to pick some more tactical & technical player like Mal Pugh & Rose L. Simply picking the tall fast girls at ulittles and moving them through the ranks isn't working anymore. USWNT is starting to see the light but change will take time. At least they are trying.

Iceland has 330,000 people; we have nearly 330million. If they can create one top notch mens' team from the equivalent of a small US city, so can we. I agree with the OP - it's about leadership and coaching. We have the athletes, plenty of them in fact.

We don't even have TV viewing audiences for MLS Soccer games (250K avg 4/17) across a country of 330 million.

We are not Iceland where Soccer is King. We are the USA where Trump is king.

US Soccer has done a horrible job on the men's side. They will wreck the women's side too.

China has 1.4 Billion people and yet they don't have a Men's team that is any good.

When your country doesn't love the sport above everything else it doesn't matter the population. When your country does love the sport above all like Iceland, Netherlands & Belgium you can do great things with a small population.

This is the USA, Soccer is not a sport of our people. Heck, NASCAR has a better following.
