US Club Soccer BD's letter to members

    https://usclubsoccer.org/2018/08/11/...ur-membership/

Interesting letter. What stood out to me are the sections related to the YNT ID and selection process. Currently the perceived thought/fears is that only GDA players will be selected going forward over ECNL players. If you look at the current women's YNT selections it seems like a realistic trend. It will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next year or 2.

A LETTER FROM THE US CLUB SOCCER BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO OUR MEMBERSHIP
Posted at 15:32h in News Share
    August 11, 2018

Dear US Club Soccer member organizations, players and coaches,

Over the past few weeks, US Club Soccer has engaged with U.S. Soccer leadership to discuss multiple issues raised by the membership over the past year. We are encouraged by these recent conversations and look forward to working with U.S. Soccer and other affiliates to address these issues and begin to repair the increasingly fractured youth soccer landscape.

US Club Soccer takes seriously our responsibility to create a positive environment that supports our clubs and leagues in the development of players. In this role, we aim to prioritize the issues that most negatively affect our membership, understanding that some of them took more than a decade to reach current levels and may not be solved as quickly as we would like. Regardless of how long it takes to develop and implement solutions, we are committed to supporting our membership and positively resolving all of these issues.

The US Club Soccer Board of Directors appreciates your input. We would like to communicate to you our position on the issues you have raised and welcome further input on all of these issues through your elected board members. We will be working with U.S. Soccer and others to address the following issues in search of a better environment for our membership, and in the game generally:

We support the formation of task forces with authority to collaboratively review, evaluate and affect change in youth soccer.
We believe there is a clear distinction between recreational and select soccer, including the motives that drive children to participate and/or leave our sport.
We believe players should participate in competitively appropriate platforms, but there are negative, unintended consequences associated with establishing those levels too young.
We believe in the importance and value of multiple pathways for identification/scouting into youth national team selection.
We believe that no coach or scout should discriminate against or put pressure on players that implies they will be viewed, scouted, or evaluated differently for national team selection based on league or club affiliation.
We believe players should feel free to participate with any club, league, program or organization without pressure or fear of retribution or discrimination.
We support the creation of objective measures of clubs charged with the development of players, based on the daily environment established by the club and not exclusively on the league in which they participate.
We believe clubs and their leadership should be the primary decision-makers in the structure and organization of soccer.
We fully support our youth and full national teams and will continue to assist their future success any way we can.
As your representative members of the US Club Soccer Board of Directors, we are committed to supporting your efforts and voicing your concerns. We are dedicated to making the game better for players, clubs, and coaches, and doing so professionally, honestly, and collaboratively.

Thank you for sharing your voice with us, and for being a part of our organization!

    Sincerely,
US Club Soccer Board of Directors

Nt selection process is a concern for a tiny handful of players. Wish they would focus more on controlling the outrageous travel burden that is a much bigger concern for the families of competitive players.

      Actions are louder than words

Let's see if they keep to their words. The last round of invites for U14/U15 says differently. They should pick the best players not just from one league. The current U20 WWC underscores that point. US team lacks any chemistry. The world is catching up and we are fighting over Alphabet leagues.

Agree. 99% of the players population have other issues that NT callups. Cost and travel are big issues for most families.

They have to pick the best players. U20 girls didn’t advance out of group play in u20 WCup. They can’t afford to play around now.

It is not such a big issue for the Northeast. The lions share of players are from California.

              I'll paraphrase that e-mail.

"Holy crap, we just lost 4,000 teams which is about 60,000 players in EDP's move to USYSA alone. Crap, crap, crap. And what's worse, ECNL and NPL are now second tier leagues to BDA and GDA so while they are both going to survive, they won't be the go-to places for top kids to play again. Damn. Uh, so for everyone still with us, please don't leave! We promise to do better somehow."

And talk about being hypocritical. US Club used to run U12 and U13 Pre-Academy leagues for DA clubs. Now that the DA took over those age groups, US Club says those age groups shouldn't exist in DA?

If they really gave a damn they would do the following.

                  1) Eliminate ENPL. The DA programs are the national programs. There is zero need for national programs this below that level. National level tournaments at the end of the NPL/ECNL year is ok. But National Leagues are costly and team entry is based on who can afford it as much as who really is the best.

                  2) Speaking of NPL/ECNL, f that noise. Have one club based regional league per region, not multiple overlapping leagues. And force a club to compete in one and only one of them. It will dramatically improve the competition. And arrange it so that all of the teams from one club play all of the teams from another club at the same location on the same day to make it easy on the coaches, trainers and families.

                  3) Have one set of ID camps run per region, administrated by the NPL/ECNL league in that region. But open it up to all worthy players (by invitation), not just NPL/ECNL players.

                  4) At the same regional level you offer the club based competition (above in #2) have a matching team based regional league run in the same area and administered by the same organization. This will make it much easier to promote and demote clubs between the club based and team based leagues. Again, force clubs to stick with one league for all their teams.

                  5) Lastly, local travel. Again, force clubs to stick with one league for all their teams.

Do the above and you have a sensible track of promotion, stability and still have a way of identifying talent from players in all leagues under this system.

Its all lip service from US Club. They don't have a voice anymore. The EDP power play just took out their legs. I'm not even sure if the USSDA cares if going forward they will only pick talent from 1 league and 1 geographic region (Cal). Do they have a process in place to find the best players or just picking players that they already know? Looking at the U20 WWC, it felt like they just picked players that were in the system already.

The only item i would add is banning clubs from calling themselves academy unless they are in DA.....

then ban the word "elite" as well. Both are the two most overused terms in youth soccer.
