The DA/GDA and RTC/ODP offer scholarships to those in need to help those families with the financial burden. If kids truly want to play the game, programs are in place for those that can't afford to play the game even when they are Ulittles. Financial assistance is available at many local clubs to help those families. These clubs are non-profit and want to help those who really want to play the game. Parents just need to apply. There are other obstacles that come into play other than the financial piece. Many families can't find the time to get players to and from practice locations. Practice times and location often change making it difficult for families to adjust and plan with work and other children. Families and players get tired of spending more time in the commute to practice than practicing itself. Sacrifices are made in terms of time, money, high school sports, social life and school that make DA/GDA too difficult of a commitment for most. It's not just a bunch of wealthy kids getting free soccer. It's a bunch of kids who choose soccer over everything else who are lucky enough to have committed parents or family/friend structure in place to make it work. It's a sacrifice on all who participate (players and families) so please stop demeaning the value of it. |

Unregistered | Personally feel that everyone should pay the same but I'm not US Soccer. However, then you won't get the best players developed. The effects of pay-to-play start very young. If the goal is really to develop the best soccer players then sliding scales should be used from the youngest ages. Without help from the youngest ages, it will mostly only be the wealthiest kids that move up through our pay to play system.

Unregistered | Aren't most on Thorns from wealthy families? If you want to do away with pay to play you should do a sliding scale.

Unregistered | Freeloaders? You mean every player on every Thorns academy team? The difference is (I presume) the ECNL kid who needs a scholarship doesn't show up to training sessions in a Range Rover bragging about her Caribbean vacation.

Coach tells him that there are better players and playing time is not a give in competive soccer. He can’t handle the truth so posts on here anonymously. |
