    Art Programs for Soccer Players

This is an interesting combo, but my kid is a freshman in high school and a solid forward.
As much as D1 seems to be the goal of many parents, for us we want her at a college that has a solid women’s soccer team and a great art program since she is an artist. Which college in the US has a solid program in both areas? We are having a hard time narrowing down the search. She doesn’t care if she’s D1 she wants to play soccer and do her art.

What does one do with an art degree?

If someone's good at it? All kinds of things. All that stuff that people buy to put in their houses or on their walls and companies put into products and advertisement doesn't just make itself.

16% of working artists have art degrees.

"Fine art is the least valuable major in college, according to a new survey of 162 degrees in the US. The unemployment rate for graduates is a staggering 9.1 percent, while those who do get jobs face a lower annual income of $40,855 on average."

Yes, art is fun. It's also not a great path living.

Too many "degrees" are being offered which don't amount to anything, and then the complaints roll in about hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt that need to be paid back.

Look for an Art minor, and a Marketing major so you could come out of college with a worthwhile skill. Otherwise, just scrap college alltogether and become an artist and save a chunk of money.

Lots of out of work artists on Broadway, LA,and throughout the country. Starving artists is the harsh reality these days.

Better off getting a degree in computer science and/or analytics. That is where the jobs will be the next 15 to 20 years.

Asking my kid to do computer work instead of her gift of art is like asking your kid to play chess instead of soccer. We don’t pick our kids passions or talents, thank you for the advice.

Brown and cross register and RISD. Or Tufts and Museum School. From a college soccer player/artist.

Many of those jobs are managing artists, more business skills than art related

                      - Art History Major who got a masters in something else

While I respect that, there are many artists who can combine a well paying job while also working on their art in their spare time. My FIL was a teacher and a pharmacist who painted in his spare time. He became quite an accomplished artist. There is always time to pursue your passion while also having a well paying career.

Most kids who major in Art are from wealthy families so making a living isn’t a concern.

Also depends on what people mean by "an artist." If it's really about creating art and trying to make a living as an artist then college may not even be the best path but rather a top notch art school. Or, like one of my kid's closest friends who majored in art but worked his way through school and got some kick ass scholarships, graduated with no debt, and is now getting a masters in art education (also with minimal debt). If you just want to work in the arts and be around creative people then do a double major or art minor with business or other employable skills.

So instead of recommending colleges that have good soccer teams and string art programs... you decide to advise against this child going into the arts. You guys are a piece of work. Look at the state Universities they usually have Fine Arts and Desigb and some of the best soccer teams. If you do want to go ivy route Yale has a solid soccer team and one of the best design programs.
