I have a u10 boy now. We are in Branford playing for one of the clubs at sportsplex. if all keeps going well, he should move up a level in a few years. all of the "big clubs" are a hike, and no one here says anything good about any of them. Whats a parent to do?

Stay where you are and enjoy the JV team in High School. If your kid wants to play at the higher level you make the commitment to do that. That means long drives etc. Staying where it is convenient will only lead to disappointment down the road. Its not for everyone. -
pretty obvious. At his age, if he is a good player, Rush is your best choice - SCP is dead. But if he is a great player (run around players older than him) then look at the bigger clubs. Too early to spend 3500 and travel an hour each way unless he is way above the talent around him.Comment

Find good coaching and a fun atmosphere near you. Encourage him to play with friends at the park or backyards or do online training - IF HE WANTS. Let him drive the bus, not you. Make sure he plays other sports too. In middle school kids often lose interest or it gets even stronger, and by then you'll get a better idea of where his skills fit and if he even should go to a bigger clubComment

This thread is absurd. The OPs kid should not be looking at pricey clubs right now do something close to home, doesn't cost too much, good coaching and FUN). He may not even be playing soccer in 2-3 years when that starts to matter more, and by then the landscape will have changed again. That's one constant in youth soccer - change.Comment

OP here, thanks for all the replies. I do like what Ginga has to offer as a step up in the near term, and I was overlooking that middle hop from here to there and maybe to a bigger club later.
But another question: Lets assume my kid is good enough to step into the OW or FSA first teams and be in the top third right now (I know I am biased, and I do not know the player pools there. Just for the sake of discussion). How much harder is it to break into that team as an outsider if we wait until after the move to 11 v 11?Comment

Making the team at OW for U10 boys is no guarantee he'll have a spot on the roster at u14 and above. A majority of the u10 boys move on to other clubs by HS for various reasons - some by choice but others are encouraged to look elsewhere or are just plain cut. It may actually be easier to make the team at u14 if he gets more individual attention at a smaller club in the interim.Comment
