The struggle is real. But in that same time period when your family struggled, african american kids were still not permitted legally to enter many colleges despite Brown v Board, and were prevented from voting. On top of that, the 1960s were a time of much higher marginal tax rates on the wealthy, where education was funded on a much higher per capita level, and where a blue collar job (and not just owning a blue collar company) allowed a family to afford a home and school, often on a single salary. Then came Nixonion economics, which were kicked into high gear during Reagan (and continued by democrats too during Clinton and, to some extent, Obama). The world, unfortunately, has changed economically, but not enough socially. More people need to have the opportunity your parents did to earn their family's way up the social ladder.
