    Promotion and Relegation

    Hello everyone,

I wanted to see what the forum's view was on a promotion/relegation system being implemented in the US. I personally believe it would only help the development of the US as a soccer nation but I am curious to hear what everyone else thinks.

    How would it help?

By allowing clubs to retain players and develop systems which can challenge the "top" teams which are currently in the MLS. It would also allow for more choice for parents to see results actually occurring and allow them to move to clubs which are successful and represent their region well. It would allow anyone to compete and let the top coaches actually show why they are worth their money

And yet in pro-rel systems of Europe (Spain, England, Italy, Germany) the teams that actually compete (not fighting to keep from being relegated but fighting for league title) are doing so by purchasing top players. But, hey, don’t let that get in the way.

They do buy the top players but then there is a trickle down effect with the money which is spent on the player. If a club such as Ajax which has a proven development system were to sprout up in the US, you would see more clubs focusing on the development of their own players which would then allow for more growth in the game in the states.

Promotion and relegation doesn't work in systems where the players aren't contractually obligated to a club for long periods. The reason it doesn't work in youth soccer is that parents move their children from relegated teams to promoting teams every year thereby ruining the roster continuity needed for such a system to work.

Additionally, it promotes winning over development. A player could be in a great developing situation, with great support, training, facilities and appropriate competition. But the team may not be performing. Moving a player to a promoted or higher team may not yet be in their best developmental interest, but parents find it difficult to judge individual development vs. team results.

But that has nothing to do with Pro-Rel and everything to do with profits gleaned from selling of players. Ajax figured out they can make more money feeding other clubs than they can being champions of Europe. They still compete in Eriedivisie but that’s about it. They are the Sounders of Europe.

Ajax made the champions league semi-final last year (beating Real Madrid in the quarterfinal) and barely missed the final on away goals.

2018-2019...and before then? They are inarguably one of the top 5 clubs in terms of development but getting out of the group stages 1 time in a decade does not mean much. Their standings in Europe do not match their development and they are outplayed and outcompeted year in and year out by clubs who purchase their way to the top.

My point is that in Europe the top teams that truly compete for the top might have good development but they are not maintaining their standing from that development. They are on top because they purchase the talent that has been developed elsewhere.

But, even the great Ajax of 2018-2019 only had 4 players that went through their youth system in their starting 11. 3 more came from other Netherland clubs. Even they get more players from buying them.
