    College recruiting

Will high school soccer ever be enough? Why has club soccer taken over the college recruitment? Football does not rely on outside teams to get kids noticed by college coaches... why does soccer? The crazy costs with clubs and travel makes soccer a rich kid sport. The current economic crisis may make it even more focused on cash rather than skill. Any thoughts that covid will cause college coaches to look at high school games rather than “elite”teams?

My son is a junior in HS and we spent so much time and $$$ playing for various academies (PDA Shore, CSA etc) jumping from one place to the next. Looks like he may be D3 at best as those are the only looks he’s getting. Wish we found a solid local team with a good foundation, training and limited cost instead. Oh well seems like that’s the youth soccer landscape these days. Borderline disgusting. As a parent I should have done a better job guiding and doing my research.....

The simple answer is NO! Depending on the college there are some who do not want you to play high school because (in there opinion) you will pick up bad habits. Most of the club players love playing high school they would never not play but they all know to get recruited to play in college you need to be seen playing in highly competitive matches and playing in a competitive league training with competitive teammates. College coaches need to see and watch you play in a competitive environment and high school soccer lacks the depth of talent on a team along with the skills and technical training. Depending on the college coaches see soccer training as a year round program and high school soccer only lasts up to 4 months.

People tend to forget that grades and SAT/ACT scores are a huge factor as well into what level of college someone may go as well as desire to play early and often. If you are doing the club thing to get a full ride and/or play pro then you are going to have a large shot of reality come soph/junior year. What club can do his help get into a good school that your kid likes and will provide a good education and some people to hang with off the bat. Maybe a scholarship as well.

The college coaches talk a good game but in the end they play the same size and speed game as the high schools.

Are there any positions or instances when soccer players are looked at by colleges through high school?

MF Shore. The only place to bring your kid to if you want them to get a scholarship. All the other clubs are an embarrassment and a waste of time. Our club will be the destination club in NJ. If your kid isn't here, they shouldn't be playing soccer and should just give it up and plan on a career washing dishes...

Obviously it could be enough like in other sports. But what would that do to all these expensive leagues?

We had a local D3 coach show up at D’s state sectional quarterfinal game who talked with her HS coach about all the seniors on the team.
