[BOYS] MLS Two-Tier DA & USL Academy League

It looks like the USSF (US Soccer) help themselves out and listened to their professional league partners.

They (USSF) minimized their overhead by getting out of the DA game.

They gave the MLS Academies their own league allowing them to develop homegrown players in a more competitive environment.

Non-MLS teams in the lower tier and USL teams will all primarily be pay to play. If applied correctly, they should be able to operate for profit which will especially help the revenue starved USL teams.

It makes sense for the MLS, USL, and Non-MLS DA's to play nice together and create three leagues that work in unison. I believe it was mentioned that the top 2 or so teams from the Non-MLS DA league can be "Promoted" up to the Pro academy division. Similar agreements should be created with the USL academy league and Non-MLS DA's.

USSF, who sanctions both the MLS and the USL, had to envision this to some degree before blowing up the old format. If it is they may deserve a little credit.

A three-tiered product that rewards strong play.

It’s to good of an idea for USSF to think up.

I'm a big fan of a promotion/demotion system. However, it involves demotion and MLS teams/academies will never allow a system where they might be demoted.

Three tiers may be too much. Placing filters on who can play whom will result in higher costs and travel. This will be a single tiered league but the least competitive games will be minimized (not eliminated) but that is probably the best that can be hoped for short term.

They could probably take a cue from the NCAA and have a few at large designations in each league. This hybrid would allow the MLS teams The freedom to develop without regard to standings but still dangle the carrot for lower division to progress. If it’s a true pyramid and we are about the top division then they could increase at large bids as deemed fit. The top league just wants competition, if you include worthy teams it will learn the travel load.

What would be ridiculous is if the USSF did not introduce this type of DA system. If they did not have a conversation with Both MLS and USL staff then they grossly incompetent. Good luck winning any type of international competition.

You clearly arent following whats going on. The MLS sides will comprise Tier 1. Tier 2 and 3 will be where the relegation/promotion is occurring. Tier 2 and 3 will be lesser talented than tier 1. The question is whether there is enough interest to justify the travel.

Didn’t some of the Non MLS teams already commit to ECNL already?

That would be their loss, although it looks like there is a gap until the MLS league will commence. Everything is very fluid, so it seems...

First, the Cosmos no longer exist. So the same teams would be playing each other over and over under your scenario. Maybe they add BarcaProNy or a few other sides, Beachside, DUSC, etc. In essence just expand the CSL to older age groups. The other thing you seem to be missing is that the USL and MLS leagues, as presently contemplated, are only U15, 17 and 19s.

Bite your tongue. The Cosmos affiliation with the pro team no longer exsist. That does not mean the youth segment can’t go full pay to play and continue on in name only.

Also, only NY teams are listed. If you combine both NY/NJ you can have a stand-alone divisions.

The MLS clubs are only inviting the non-MLS into the league in order to alleviate travel costs. That is negated if they separate into tiers. The MLS academies know they have to play non pro academy teams.
