2 MLS Academies Shutter Girls Programs

Both LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes are completely closing down their highly successful girls programs (even winning DA Natl Championships) as it is no longer lucrative to be operating them. Unfortunately seeing successful professional organizations close their programs make me worried about the future. And NY Cosmos just closed their boys academy, sad times we’re living in.

Things are about to get much more local. The idea that we need national travel or even huge regional leagues is crazy. If all the best players returned to town based teams we would all be perfectly fine and we would save a lot of money as well.

      A. This is the problem. Only the United States want to make profit in football right away. The rest of the world develops and later on sells players to make profit.

      B. Well done. Let's shut down these fake academies.

Not sad. Their existence was sad. Insane monetization of youth soccer with stupid travel that did nothing to help the players improve and just shut a lot of good players out. This is actually progress

You do realize LA Galaxy GDA was funded by the MLS team?

            A. Is called slavery in the US

            B. LA Galaxy and SJEQ had some stellar teams not to mention LA Galaxy GDA teams were funded by the MLS club.

The response to A is why this model doesn't work in the US. Is not slavery because the Clubs invest in players and players sign a contract when they join agreeing to go to the club that signs the player. The club is making an investment and is expecting a return on that investment. You can't have it both ways, either pay for quality training or offer a return on investment. People who complain about the money being spent in travel soccer should play with a town team where Molly's dad is the coach.

                NYCFC charged players
                NYCFC left GDA
                GDA is over

                Nothing more to say.

And pretty soon, those town clubs are going to come back and get rid of these million dollar clubs that parents fall for.

It really may happen. I know people are holding onto whatever normalcy they can but i think realistic is that 50% of private clubs fold, including big ones in "top" leagues. Town programs will be what steps in to save kids playing.

Quite a sad development if that happens as it will cripple a whole industry....damn COVID19.

Not really. Everyone will move back to town clubs where they will all have to hire good coaches. The bad ones just looking for paychecks will be done. Hence, big clubs having trouble. It's not reasonable to charge $3-4k for a sport. Tournaments and leagues need to bring their prices down too.

Yes the trend has already begun....once a few of these bloated business go under the flood gates will open. Can’t wait to see that as the business aspect will be gone. It is hurting the sport.

Do you really think that "Good Coaches" will just go to any town club? They will just work with kids off to the side, uninsured and illegally

What is your definition of a town club? It's not necessarily having Molly's dad coach. There are town clubs that have a professional staff and they don't charge absurd money. Kids still get to college.
