The end of the ECNL/Thorns debate

With the rollout of the 2020-21 fee structure for Thorns the Ecnl/thorns debate is officially over.

Both pathways are pay to play for the wealthy and upper middle class only.
Both pathways will help the most elite players connect with top programs outside of Oregon.
Both programs will roster average players who spend thousands of dollars on soccer only to end up committed at D3 and NAIA schools.
Players will hop from program to program when they don’t get identified as the superstar they and their parents think they are.
Both programs will use that hopping to take credit for each other’s commits.
Smart families of elite players will recognize they don’t need to buy into the hype and sacrifice time and money, and their kids will still end up at a school that is a good fit with an excellent program.
A bunch of the same old Oregon coaches will continue to make a very comfortable living selling their promises to hopeful families.

Ecnl, you are what you always promised to be and no one can fault that. A pay to play program for priviliged kids whose parents would rather fly to Arizona for games than drive to Medford. You have delivered exactly what you promised.

Thorns - what a letdown. You said you’d be different. You said you’d only take the top players and rostered girls cut from high school teams. You said you’d end the pay to play aspect of soccer and are charging $8000/year - the same or more than Ecnl and OYSA teams cost. You said you’d follow GDA philosophy and rules and yet you are just another club team. You had a chance to change Oregon girls soccer forever. And you failed.

Are you seriously surprised? The ONLY reason the GDA was free was because that was the only hope the Timbers/Thorns has to recruit players and they failed.

As for fees.... who do you think should pay for YOUR kid’s soccer? Get over it. Nothing is free in this country.

The end of the ECNL/Thorns debate

Agree, Thorns DA had so much potential and process and has miserably failed, getting worse every year with top kids leaving and lack of development. Now with massive price increase makes it much more unattractive.

Yes ECNL teams fly to Arizona and play high quality soccer. Any ECNL team would drive to Medford and be up 10-0 in the first half and then kick the ball around in circles the second half. Who would benifit from that kind of soccer. It's hard for some people to admit but the ECNL players are just better than the other players in Oregon. Are they better than a lot of the other players in other states? Maybe, maybe not, but at least the travel allows them the chance to play top teams and improve rather than playing the same 10 teams in the state for their entire youth soccer career.

I think there was intent to create a good program but honestly I don't think the people that were designing it and running it really understood elite girls soccer. There are some pretty key things to know. And with girls you have to understand how to get parents on board too.

Let’s be honest. The Thorns DA never had a chance. The GDA format doesn’t work for girls and the accelerating decline is evident across the country. Locally, just look at the yahoos in charge. The GDA had no chance in Oregon.

I’m the OP and I didn’t think anyone should pay for MY kid’s soccer. I can afford to pay for it myself. But the promise of GDA was that the playing field would be leveled and elite soccer wouldn’t be pay to play. That poor kids would have the ability to play at the highest level without fees or travel being a barrier. Thorns, at $8k a year, is an abject failure in that regard.

If you step back and look at the GDA, it never promised that. The GDA was just a broken platform US Soccer put forth to compete with the ECNL. It was a response and not a strategical thought through program.

Some clubs, including MLS franchises, chose to subsidize the GDA. Crossfire Premier for example subsidizes their top girls program. This used to be GDA and now ECNL (again) since they believe the best platform for girls soccer is ECNL. Few clubs have the financial resources to to this - though I am sure most or all wish they did.

The Timbers were never really committed to the GDA. They have never really been committed to youth soccer in Oregon. Their involvement is about control, marketing, and letting some less scrupulous people leach an income off the backs of you soccer without providing any real value back to the non profit community.

Your new hobby should be conventions of the English language.
