    Return on Investment

Get smart parents and practice what you preach to your kids. Economics 101. Your rate of return should exceed your investment over long run... Including your kid’s. I am certain that you upper middle class parents ( because let’s face it- soccer not a sport for those without means) are starting to wonder where is my rate of return on this endeavor? Your portfolios did not rise on account of foolish and reckless investment decisions.

3700 per year for elite soccer plus travel plus uniforms equals about 10k a year.

    Is your kid committed?

I can not wait for the “ my kid just wanted to play” posts.

I see and hear you all.. so desperately trying to justify where your kid stands in all and embarrassed to admit you are really paying for glitzy cars for coaches and owners new stadiums and resort hotels for showcases.

Depends what you are looking for out of your experience. You can look at it as about $15-20 an hour for the amount of time they get with their teams. Not bad when you look at it like that. Maybe a few teams fly to 2 events but that’s optional

I struggle each year with this as I write that check.....so, so painful.

Many of the parents (sheep) out there have money to burn, and see this as the way to the college promised land. The ROI on this premier soccer stuff never pays off, and most of us know it and just shrug our shoulders thinking that this is "just the cost of doing business".

Who has the courage to step off of the hamster wheel?

#1 lesson about family activities is to never, never, NEVER consider the ROI. There is .0000001% chance anything you do as a family will give you a financial return.

Enjoy raising your kids and spending time with them. You can't put a return on that and shouldn't even be trying. They are your kids, not stocks.

Not everything in life needs to be viewed in ROI terms, especially kids activities. For some, I suppose you could view premier soccer as an investment per se, for many it’s simply a kids activity. I never view it (kid’s sports and activities) in financial investment terms, to me it’s not and has never been about that. What’s the ROI for summer camp for some kids, band camp for some kids, robotics camp, swim camp, etc? Viewing everything in ROI terms is silly. I want ROI in my 401-K, real estate, stocks and mutual funds.

I think the thing that sucks is that if you want your kid to play in college they need to play in one of the expensive pay-to-play leagues (that is what the marketing powerhouse ECNL says over and over). Just gives you that trapped feeling.

Spending $10k per year from u12 to u18 for simply a "kids activity"?....with that amount of money being required, you have to start thinking to yourself..."is it really worth it?" For many of us, that $10k a year is simply not an option.

what's the ROI on taking a vacation? Zero, zippo, zilch financially. Yet we all do it. Some of the ROI is intangibles that can't be measured. But obviously you don't understand that. The site is called "talking-soccer". If you don't like it, then why the f are you here? No matter the level, there's a financial commitment. And not all parents think their kids are getting full rides, are gonna play in college, or start on the National Team. Some are realistic and hope that the sport helps their child in different ways. Again, it's too bad that understanding that fact is above your intellectual level. But maybe if you went upstairs and asked your mother to explain it, you'll get a better understanding.

Understood. But is getting on a plane 2 to 3 times a year really necessary to get the full benefit of playing a sport as a youth?

You seem defensive with your F bombs. Calm down...just trying to explore the topic which is relevant to most of us.

                            Not the OP..

Some use colorful language, some don't...don't get so defensive about it....

                            Is it necessary? No.

Have I gone to FL, VA, NC, OH, CO, CA, KS because of it? Yes. Did we enjoy ourselves? Yes. Would I have gone to any of those locations otherwise? No. Was it "worth" it? Yes

So, we called it a family vacation with a side-trip every day to watch soccer. Sounds great to me.

No one is spending (or definitely shouldn’t be) $10k a year at u12, u13, u14 and shouldn’t be at u18 either.

Individual families need to make decisions that work for them. If they can easily afford high costs for kids activities, great. If they can’t, then they need to examine their budget and make decisions. No one is forcing anyone to pay for anything.
