TIME TO STOP the predator coaches in girls soccer

    https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2019/...of-misconduct/

This is outrageous and disgusting. There is a huge power dynamic between a coach and his female players that does not allow for a normal relationship and completely violates the trust between the coach, player, her parents and school that should be present and is expected.

It is time for EVERY school (high school or college) and EVERY private club soccer association to do further and much more extensive background checks on their coaches. These young girls must be protected and not be surrounded by coaches that they trust that will prey on them.

And it is time for players and parents to come forward with information on these predators before it goes any further and any more damage is done to other girls lives.

The fact that Yale didn't turn up this pattern of disturbing incidents BEFORE he was hired is astounding. Especially after the incidents with their previous coach.

These girls deserve better. And have a right to feel safe.

I have known this to happen with female college coaches, with female players. What is crazy is those female coached end up getting hired again.

Yale says they did a background check? What did that consist of? This AD sounds like she has no idea what she's doing

"More extensive background checks"?! If it were that easy, we would be helping all people with mental illness, no bad hires would happen that lead to sexual misconduct and no criminals or people with mental health disorders would be able to purchase firearms. It's easy to say this, but please elucidate .... what more could be done that would not require dozens of reference checks per potential applicant (still not guaranteed to show anything of substance)? What more can be done that would improve the process without making the process cost prohibitive? You need to list very specific things. In this case (and I do not know for sure), if the victims do not come forward until a year after the hire, then nothing can really be done. If former employers knew these things and hid them, then perhaps they should be prosecuted if anything actually illegal was done. More than anything, as parents, we need to teach our kids from very early ages that they NOTHING is as important as they, and their character are. We need to prepare them in 18, short years to go out on their own and be self sufficient and to be cautious and self-confident enough to avoid and/or stand up to bad situations. Sorry, what happened is terrible, and he is certainly to blame, but the kids have to be willing to sacrifice things that are important to them (like soccer or even a scholarship) if something bad is unfolding. Let's face it, a lot of pressure goes on kids to achieve certain goals and we are partly to blame for making them believe those things are most important and they should do whatever they can to avoid screwing up these opportunities. I am sure being a victim is a difficult situation, but if it never comes out, then it wont show up in a background check and more people are at risk in the future. Want to get this ball rolling?? .... Start by hammering the NCAA (as usual) about this policy:

"The National College Athletics Association has not explicitly prohibited romantic relationships between coaches and players but considers “any sexual contact between a coach and an athlete abusive” given inherent power dynamics that render the concept of “mutual consent” problematic. As such, the organization in 2012 issued a report instructing member institutions to “unambiguously and effectively prohibit such relationships to ensure that sport programs offer a safe and empowering experience for all student-athletes.”"

Sounds like more than one from the article .... but no one knew. Be rational here, it's not rocket science here. We do not have a magical mind reader that shows the history of every person that has done terrible things. Looks like from this point on, he will have a tough time getting hired in the future, but before this all came up, he was just a successful coach with a very dark secret.

Surely the fact he married an ex player should have raised eyebrows

Why? There is nothing wrong with this by itself. Did they get married her senior year or the year after? The guys isn't that old now and probably wasn't much older than his players around that time. If he was characterized as a player's coach (not a victimizer), then perhaps an alumni in the area could start a relationship with him after graduating. She married the guy .... perhaps he isn't the monster being portrayed. Perhaps, after settling down, this stuff is ancient history?? Poor judgement at that time, for sure, but even by NCAA standards, nothing illegal apparently. Go ahead, start shooting at me for being a realist.

Likely true, but no one has shown that he actually committed a crime yet. Was he still doing this recently as a married guy or did it stop when he was 23?

Background checks don’t always help when colleges and universities consistently cover up sexual misconducts, rapes and other crimes committed on campuses. Anything that will hinder admissions is covered up and brushed under the carpet. This is why they have their own “police forces” and discourage reporting to outside police. They do nothing to protect victims but rather have long drawn out investigations which allows predators to transfer out - which they then drop the case. Always report to an outside police department. You might be asked to leave for doing it, but you protect yourself and get predators off campus. Prosecution of these predators should be pursued by the school’s - but they would first have to admit the problems

Where did his wife play soccer? What years? When did he coach her? When we’re they married?

Yeah, sorry to break it to you, but that's the not the standard employers apply. Colossal lapse of judgement, inappropriate behavior, lying to them (presumably in the interview or once this came up). Not sure how many employers would see those as pluses for an employee....
