    Reign Reserves

    http://elements.demosphere.com/73228...6794/TEAM.html

I was checking how the Reign Reserves were doing and I found this. 19 girls on the 05 team. Is this normal to have this many girls on the roster for Reign Reserves?

They may have extras that are normally on the DA but want to play high school and are playing on reserves until high school is over. Just guessing and have no firm data.

It’s 18. One is the manager, who is listed on the roster for some reason. It’s still a big roster and largely a function of their not having the numbers for separate 05 and 06 teams.

Injuries happen. At that level I wouldn't even think about carrying less than 18.

Just for kicks I clicked on the link above. The FC Edmonds team is crushing RR and everyone else in their league. Then I clicked on their link http://www.skyc.net/fcedmonds and saw they placed 3rd at Nationals. Only to discover this team and club are coached by volunteers. And their teams look like they do fairly well in the PSPL. Bet you their club fees are way cheaper in comparison to other RCL/PSPL teams. Anyone know more about this club, esp on the boys side?

Spoken like a club bean counter who needs to make payroll for a bunch of “directors” or someone who has consumed their kool aid for too long. No real reason to carry more than 15 at that age/level other than $, and even more so in DA or ECNL where subs are limited. Rely on play ups as needed and to provide playing opportunities for kids who would benefit.

That FC Edmonds team has been around and together for a long time. The coaches previously had a very successful team (also Quiet Riot) that they kept mostly together all the way through u18. The team could compete in RCL 1, and has been competitive with RCL 1 teams in tournaments over the years. Probably not a model that can be replicated in this day and age given the time commitment required by the coaches and the buy in required by families who have lots of shiny objects to consider, but kudos to them for doing what they’ve done.

You guys have no idea. And the constant Reign bashing is getting old... in this case hilarious because the explanation is fairly benign.

This is a combo team of players from the older squad that either did not play high school or late birth year players not yet in HS. They are combined with the younger squad that does not yet play HS. So it's a combo team of 7th and 8th graders. Low and behold every ECNL/RCL club also does the same thing. With combo teams of players than are bridging 8th and 9th grade and play in the Fall league of RCL or PSPL.

These players are bubble players and Core players from "RCL" and "Select" clubs that either want to get serious about soccer, or were never given a shot. Before you suggest these are all B teamers, I'd suggest watching a practice with OT and the team. Practices are an order of magnitude better than what I've witnessed in RCL. They are as good as some of the ECNL practices. Give them a couple of years and see where they are.

As far as getting players...I know of many players coming to DA open sessions in Nov from ECNL, RCL and PSPL teams. The few trolls here attempting to pressure and dissuade players and parents from looking into Reign, or even going to the Reign NWSL games to support the adult team is well known by the very small and well connected Seattle Soccer community and noted. (addressing the trolling RCL and ECNL coaches that read this).

I wrote the post you quoted above, which I didn’t see as “Reign bashing.” I think they’ve overall done fairly well in dealing with various challenges they’ve faced in year 1 of their reserve program— Bobby Morris has worked out much better than feared (it’s a good central field and a single security officer can work wonders in keeping it clear), Amy is a promising hire who hopefully will bring long term stability and commitment once she wraps up at UW and was brought in quickly and smoothly after Kim’s unexpected departure, the 05 and up DA teams are all solid, and they’ve generally taken the high road vis-a-vis some pretty bad behavior from some of the rcl clubs. I believe the 05 team is an 05/06 combo team for the year, not just the fall, and that having 18 on the roster makes it hard for other good 05’s and 06’s to come in after the hs season and tough on the coach to get everyone playing time. It wasn’t supposed to be a combo team, but they didn’t get the numbers, had to adjust, and were up front about their need to do so. With the range of ages and abilities— some kids could play da or ecnl, some are coming from select— on that team it will be hard to keep everyone happy, but OT you’re right that OT runs a good session and is a knowledgeable, caring and passionate young coach.

Kim’s departure can partially be traced to the harassment she had to endure from particular coaches and parents in this area. You can see some of their toxicity leaking out on this forum.
I wouldn’t want to coach either with the amount of hate mail RCL club directors, coaches and others manage to dump in into the mailboxes of who should be the hero’s and inspiration for young female players. Coaches who obviously have zero respect for the game, the female players and themselves. I’ve observed so much garbage behavior from coaches towards female teams and the coaches of those teams in their own club. The more I hear the more I’m ready to call them out by name.

There will be more slots available for these reserves teams, and there are open slots now on the U14 DA team.

Honestly, half of your Reign A team are B team players and same goes for ECNL. Unless your dd is an absolute stud, you should be worried if the real A team ECNL players came to the open sessions, but they won't, unless arrangements have been made before hand. At this level it isn't, "oh who is she?" but rather "oh, X is here." No strangers here.

Unless you are a Reign coach, I highly doubt you will know who is coming in from ECNL because any sign of disloyalty, like attending an open session, will result in being kicked off the team. Impact players which everyone will know will not be there unless they are already on the team.

People troll you Reign parents because you are so easy to troll. You guys go from 0 to 100 "rabid, defend Reign at all costs and circle the wagons" mode. Kind of funny and scary. Hey, all of this drama will end soon enough. Relax and enjoy the journey. Until, my kid decides to join the Reign and put your kid to ride the pine. :)

"elite" soccer has been so diluted that there's AT MOST 0-3 actual elite players per ecnl and da team. everyone one else is totally interchangeable. that's why parents of kids on these teams are so on edge all the time and the coaches have so much power. because in the end their player is easily replaceable.

In my humble opinion, most folks on this site take CHILDREN'S soccer waaaaaay too seriously. Albeit, high level CHILDREN'S soccer it is a sport and sports are about personal growth and having fun. We all would love for our kids to be the star of the squad and get a college scholarship. However, this is a GAME that's primarily supposed to be fun. The kids will grow up. Quit trying to speed up the process. Let them play. Let them have fun. Shut up. Please.
