I don't get it. This is our "National" team - but it is run and controlled by a non-profit whose only mission seems to be to generate revenue and income for the people who run it. How did they get the right to field a team on behalf of our country? Is there some international organization that recognizes them and only them? Can someone explain?

They need to get out of the business of youth soccer and focus on ways to better identify and develop the nation's top talent. We did better with ODP!

I think hiring Greg made perfect sense. He was the most deserving best candidate. No nepotism at all......

The Coach
I hear a lot of people blaming the coach and the system. Admitedly trying to play possession with an international team is very very hard to do since they don't play together often enough.
But that said the problem on the field isn't the coach or the system or the style of play. These guys were simply giving the ball away. And booting it down the field wouldn' t have improved things at all. Poor touch, poor decisions, very poor passing. Sorry but that isn't on the coach.
I just don't think these guys are committed to the national team. At least not committed to the future of it and the idea of actually winning. They play more like this stuff is all for exhibition.
I think that is what people are talking about when they say this team lacks fire. And I think they are right. The US team has never had the world's best players. But they hated to lose. They wanted to win. These guys look more like they are there for themselves than they are being their for the idea of representing their country, etc...
Take McKinney for example. The guy looks like he is ready to get in a fist fight after the game's first foul. What is he trying to prove? Why isn't his head in the game instead of being more concerned with every ticky tacky foul?

You say it's not the coach and then inadvertently make the exact opposite argument. Everything you cite could be fixed with the right leader. Coaches need to inspire and make sure they have players who are there for the right reasons. Herb Brooks had his Olympic team selected before try outs because he spent the time judging character so the rest would come easy.
Does Berhalter seem to be an inspirational leader? Especially when the players know that he is there primarily because his brother is part of the front office.
(and fwiw, McKinney regularly plays with that chip on his shoulder in the Bundesliga also. It does get tiring very quick.)
