    Flop! Flop! Flop!

I watched several club games this weekend. There were multiple age groups and genders. Man, I saw so many flops. Where is this coming from? Are kids being taught this? They look like ridiculous drama queens out there, especially the boys. It’s embarrassing to watch. A lot of times the refs didn’t call fouls on these theatrical displays, and the actors were left on the ground looking like fools, while the rest of the kids played their soccer game. As it should be.
Do you see a trend of certain clubs doing this flopping more than others?

Consequence of the new soccer culture that watches nothing but La Liga...

I haven't seen it much at the younger ages I'm watching, but what I DO see is refs letting some of the more "physical" kids get away with murder. There's a kid on my son's U12 team who should probably be getting two yellows per game, he's so out of control with his body (and sometimes he's just plain malicious). But he rarely gets called for fouls. So the result might be coaches (or more likely parents) who are tired of fouls not being called, so they tell their kids, "if you get fouled, the only way you're getting the call is if you go down." And if a kid gets a taste of that kind of thing working, it's only a small step farther to just go down whenever you feel any contact at all. Just speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what's going on.

          Thanks for the speculation.
Just what we need more of in this country...

The game has morphed into a dance contest with no-one allowed to show any physical play.
What’s next? Ballerina skirts as uniforms?

It’s not too difficult to distinguish malicious fouls from just plain falling at the simplest contact (flopping). I think the refs are tired of stopping the game every few minutes, because some boy falls every time the wind blows.

Love the parents who scream FOUL every time their precious Brendan falls down. Nine times out of ten he either tripped over his own feet, or, in the act of legal physical contact, Brendan's tiny frame got a lesson in basic physics.

You know that soccer culture everyone keeps crowing about on this forum? That’s the culture that encourages flopping. Americans stay up and play on.

Not all "flops" are to buy a foul. If I'm rooted to the ground on two feet, and you come barreling into me, I'm leaving my feet. Maybe I'll even avoid the contact altogether, but I won't let you blow both my knees out trying to be a tough guy.

So, If I "flop" and you don't make contact...is that a foul?

(not me BTW, a conversation I've had with a teammate)

The same Americans who, oh, for an example...play QB for an American Football team which wears red/white/blue and who whines and points every time someone comes anywhere near him in an effort to buy a call?

                    THOSE kind of Americans?

Many Americans are also annoyed by these new rules in American football. Calls every 2 seconds, for roughing passer, etc.

I don’t see a ton of flopping. What I do see is a ton of both hands thrown up in the air after a ball clearly goes out on them or they foul. The classic “wasn’t me” pose and I wonder do the kids think the ref buys it? There’s one kid who does it constantly who used to play with my kid. It’s super annoying to watch.

Sounds a lot like a kid I know. Doesn't happen to be a forward who just can't seem to wrap his head around staying onsides, does he?

LOL. Nope, I'm thinking of a girl. Drives me batty. Just play the game.

I always tell my kids, if you fall for real then you fall, but don't flop because you are useless on the ground.
