I have a question a 2022 dd. We are from OOS. DD is a full time starter on a solid ECNL team. GPA is 4.25 and PSAT is 1310. Before the new recruiting changes she has 4 academic D3 schools reach out and 2 mid-tier D1s encouraging her to update them her schedule. We have only begun to discuss what she thinks she wants out of a college. Our budget is $25k/yr for everything with or without soccer. Our income is over over 200k but we have 5 children. 1 already in college and another one that will start next year. This qualifies her for our flagship state school but she would not be able to play soccer there. Can someone recommend and D3 schools whose academic merit based on her stats could get her to $25k? Open to NAIA, D1 or D2 too. Also, if you’re not a superstar D1 impact player but definitely a contributor, what is a common percentage of athletic/academic one could expect for D1. D2, or NAIA? Plays CB/OB.

Good luck; it should work out! Keep up the grades. She may qualify for some academic money that could help too.

Start first with a large list of target schools - use her school's resources or the countless online ones out there. Don't limit it based on D1 or whatever. Focus on academic fit, majors offered, size, location etc. Then take that list and overlay the soccer piece. What programs seem like they could be a good fit (take a look at the resumes of current players, watch games on line or go see games in person if local). That will help narrow the list. T
o get good athletic money you will need to be seen as an impact recruit for that program, not recruit #7 or 8 for the year. To get good academic money it's similar - you need to be well above the schools' academic requirements. Your student athlete also needs to carefully consider that D1 is much more of a job that goes on all year, while D3 offers the ability to be more like a typical student. Many D1 athletes have to stay for summers to be able to finish on time or they go on a 5 year plan.
With the exception of a few, most D2 schools are weak academically. If she focuses on D1 or D3 she will have many good academic options. Coaches like smart players who won't require a tip to get in and won't struggle academically.

My daughter, a 2019 HS grad, signed the summer going into her senior year and got money for books only at a mid-tier D1 school. Was told that number could increase in the future.

Originally posted by Unregistered View PostThe other posters are right; you should be talking to her school’s college counselor and narrowing down a list of target schools. It’s admirable that you want a $25k out of pocket number rather than going into debt, but if you can qualify for a better school, then a little debt isn’t a bad thing. For example, if you get a D2 or low D1 school for $25k, but a mid-level D1 costs $35k then that $10/yr student loan might be a better deal. A good major from a decent D1 might pay off that extra $40k within a few years of graduation. Don’t limit your search too much.

The league DOES NOT MAKE the player, the player makes the league. If a kid has the level of talent and proper motivation they don't need a league. College coaches will find them. Ever see the movie "trouble with the curve"? Funny how in other sports talent seems to get found but in soccer we have people convincing us that we need to spend tens of thousands to position our kids to be found. The only ones that need to worry about that are the ones with borderline talent.
