Dumb play on part of the coach and players..Steffan passes short right in front of the goal when Mexico is pressing...then he plays the ball up from the back when Mexico is pressing...left back has no clue what he’s doing...forwards get the ball and run backward consistently...give the PK to Sargent whose never taken one...just awful

Local Bolts player, Robinson, got into the game. Cudos for him.

They are all products of our club system now.
How’s that working out for us??

Yes, but also a significant number on top European clubs as well. We should expect better than this. Most of the players have good physical ability and skill, but the soccer IQ is lacking. Berhalter has made some questionable selections and is putting players in the wrong positions, particularly the back line. Sargent too folded under pressure.

Fine to say. But, what are your solutions.
Personally, the only way I see to make a better system is to have residency programs combining soccer and school. The IMG had or has it but has been a mixed success. I don't see this as a failure, but as an absence of more like programs.

Disagree. Just watched the recorded game. While he didn't stand out he played his position reasonably well. Neither of the two second half goals were due to his mistake. Goal number two was definitely the goalie's mistake. Number three; the defense got beat and the left back left his man unattended. Robinson was the only one who made a decent challenge after his teammate was left in the dust.

oh....and why does Sargent take the penalty kick???

For format isn’t as important as what is taught. Whether it’s the DA clubs, an MLS academy, or standing on a dirt field under a palm tree somewhere, you’ve got to teach the right things. Clearly something’s missing when we don’t employ the right tactics, select the right players, and have players play smart on the field. It starts with Berhalter. He’s used to not working with a lot with the Crew so he likes playing dark horses who may sometimes surprise, but aren’t consistently the best performers. Take Wil Trapp. Why is he needed on a limited roster? Why when the DA/MLS, etc. give you depth do you put guys so hopelessly out of position? Why when you know or see Mexico playing a high press do you insist on playing out of the back? Why are our forwards not getting behind the defense? All these things are taught and you don’t need a fancy school to teach basic, obvious soccer.

Just like any sports you need you conductor(s). Unfortunately USA has not developed anyone that caliber. Look at the struggles with the current German and Spain NT. Plus this team has NO leader. CP can cry all he wants but when you deferred your leadership responsibility and handed JS that task you should not complaining how scared the team is of Mexico.

Mexico skill level was a level higher- faster and more technical.

                        Big picture issues are

                        1) US Soccer hasn't a clue
                        2) Poor talent identification and development
                        3) Lack of quality coaching/leadership/vision

We throw a lot of resources at it but are surpassed by other countries that have much less. It isn't just about a stronger soccer culture in those countries, but that they do a better job on the points above.

The ones who play in DA? Yes. But thirteen of the top 20 FIFA ranked right now are European countries. Not all of soccer is the rag to riches, kids playing bare footed trope. They just do a better job at, well, everything. Not only is soccer a part of the culture elsewhere but it's actually a career. Here the careers are in the top US sports.

How does Iceland m, with 350.000 people put together a strong team of guys that still hold down jobs on the side, and we have more people in one county of one state and we pay these guys plenty of money to do nothing but play soccer and we can’t beat Mexico or even an island country?? Our system is broken. Our identification process isn’t working and too watered down. Go back to one ID program, like ODP. Create a league system within regions of the state with divisions like the English system. It seems to me that we can find the best football player in the country in the middle of nowhere but we can’t develop the talent we have. USSF is nothing but egos feeding each other.
