    Midfielder position

At what point does a coach stop encouraging a midfielder to take as many touches as they want and be as creative as they want? Our midfielder lost possession 9 times out of 10 and cost the team the tournament. Also likes to shoot from midfield rather than look for the pass. The entire team is frustrated. I ask because my kid has an opportunity elsewhere, and we are at the point where we don’t believe this is ever going to change.

Sounds like that blackhole at midfield is less of a problem than the person you've paid to coach your kid.

Also sounds like the OP is more focused on his kid's team winning a meaningless tournament than development...

Sounds like another pseudo know-it-all parent who can't understand much about the game...

(queue the "I played the game for XYZ years and I know a lot!" responses. Which, if it were true, you'd already know the answer before you typed the post.

LOL...cost our team the tournament. Well goddamn.

Leave. You won't be missed. No one likes parents who throw other kids under the bus.

Game should be played with 2 or 3 touches-period.
Your point is correct, your method of questioning is wrong.

No room in soccer for midfielders like that. Perhaps a different position?

I agree with the OP. Very few kids can really play midfield effectively. No one is throwing the kid under the bus. Get a life. Focus on the question at hand dip shyte

At what point does a coach start encouraging a midfielder to take as many touches as they want and be as creative as they want if the teammates all just stand around and have little idea of what movement is? Our midfielder lost possession 9 times out of 10 as he is swarmed and carried the team as far as he could in the tournament. Also likes to shoot from midfield rather than look for the pass because he can and nobody is ever open. The entire team is frustrated because they can't keep up. I ask because my kid has an opportunity elsewhere, and we are at the point where we don’t believe this is ever going to change and he knows he doesn't want to put in the work required.

I appreciate the point from a development perspective, but maybe, maybe not.

The game should be played with skill, speed, and intelligence. The game should be played to be able to solve the problem, which is getting the ball and putting it in the goal.

5 players with 2 touches isn't better or more virtuous than 1 player and 20 touches if former gives the ball away and the latter scores a goal. I think Messi would agree.

Development as in the entire team watching the midfielder show off in the midfield, lose the ball, have defense scattering to protect the net and the goalie being peppered with shots? Sounds like the beautiful game alright.

Leave. Your kid is playing for a coach whose priorities are not serving the players and their development first.

Telling kids how many touches to take like its gospel is an example of giving so much instruction to young players that they don’t develop their own IQ and are discouraged to experiment. Should we bench kids for taking more than 2 or 3 touches?

Seems the OP is trying to encourage the team to be frustrated with this young midfielder rather than concentrating on their own player’s performance. Laying all the blame on another kid - classy.

That’s an interesting perspective. I’m sure the rest of the team sees it much differently.

Sounds like your defenders need to learn to keep their shape so they are not "scattering" as a result of one player losing the ball. That's an opportunity for development...

and since when is seeing shots in a game bad for a goalie's development?
