Time to Do the Right Thing

Yesterday, during U11 game, we had a horrendous referee. The ref simply did not understand the game - that's all. That's another topic altogether, however. I've come to accept that for what it is... No reason to debate it in this thread.

But in a 1-1 game, the whistle get's blown for a questionable foul a good 9 feet outside penalty box. Ref calls it PK for opposing team. It was right in front of the opposing coach.

Then 2 minutes later, opposing team has player a good 10 feet offsides - again in front of the same opposing coach - and that player goes on to score. game over....

Big celebration at end of game by team, parents high fiving, great game right?

Well, was it? What did the players really learn?

If we want to teach kids the game of soccer. If we want to teach them to to be better human beings. If we want to teach them to respect the game.....

Be a stand up coach - set an example for your team - especially at this age group where frankly they won't remember the Wins Losses a week later...

Instead do the right thing in font of your players, and refuse the PK and.or have the player kick it out of bounds. When it's an egregious call at this age level, why not set an example for your kids? Hey kids, we want to win but not like this...

That the kids would remember for long after the game ends.

Jus sayin' coaches it may be time to stand up because if you don't, nobody will.

    Wwwhhhhhaaaaaa.

As long as their are lists to be made and gotsoccer points to be had, that's a fruitless exercise.

There are dozens and dozens of calls a game, 50% of which the refs get wrong I surmise....

Reality is it's a U11 game, the results really don't matter.

Seriously? You are complaining about a U11 game? If he/she is your oldest you are in for many more of these calls and games. Oh and it’s “off side” and not “off sides”. Not plural. And questionable and down right wrong off side calls happen all the time. Get used to it.

Guys I hate to say it but really you're part of the problem.

The quality of soccer declining and you just don't take it seriously.

That might actually be the bigger problem - is the parents.... Well I guess that's why I'm asking coaches to stand up because in today's day and age, parents don't.....

If you're going to cry and make things up, then be realistic. When you say the foul was 9 feet outside the box, you're exposed as an obvious nut.

Again, part of the problem.... when I say egregious most of us know what that means... not close... clear to everyone of field and in stands that it's wrong...

But something tells me, the responses here are the ones that would be high fiving their kids telling them what a great game... :(

Again, respect the game... It's time more did.

There should be a law against ignorant parents complaining about an offside call. Misdemeanor at U13+, jailable at the younger ages.

At the younger ages, virtually one of two things is true every time a parent complains. 1, the player was not offside and the parents don't understand the rule or 2, the player was offside and the ref, who doesn't have the benefit of someone on the sidelines at most games, missed it and oh freaking well. Let it go. Guarantee you that it will happen again and at some point your team will be on the end benefitting. Not a big deal and not worthy of getting upset.

And 10 year olds we're celebrating after a close game and you're mad? Come on. Like you said, no one will remembers the results. That goes for the losing team too. Let it go, Elsa.

Refing is horrible. Not overall, but there are some ref's when you see them then you know the game will not be called correctly. It's improving but like officials in NFL, refs in baseball, basketball (UVA/Auburn...double dribble), hockey, all of it, no officiating system is perfect. It's worse in youth sports and school sports.
Get used to it. Sometimes they can change the outcome of a game. While it may seem like they have an agenda, most do not and just make mistakes. Take it on the chin and realize it's just the way the ball bounces.
Conversely, I am not a fan when refs in any sport let the game get out of control and injuries start to happen that could have been prevented. That is when the league needs to take action and ban those refs that just want to see fight club instead of soccer. And, those are out there as well.

Assuming the OP will be signing up for the next classes to get certified.

I think that's a wonderful idea. We all know there's a shortage and not going away anytime soon. So, thank you to the OP for being part of the solution.

The the thread OP - the fact that you're this worked up abut ten year soccer shows you are WAY too vested in your kid's games. Accept it for what it is, relax and enjoy the games. Half those kids won't even be playing soccer by high school, probably even yours if you get that aggravated all the time. Otherwise, yes, get trained and be a part of the solution. Hyper involved parents who don't know the game are part of the reason they can't keep refs any longer.

You are asking for coaches to step up and do the right thing. Set an example!

May we ask what example you set during the ride home?

For many. many years children played games without Referees, Umpires , Officials or whatever. They actually developed skills of conflict resolution, management, communication , patience and understanding. For the most part, this was possible because the importance of the results of the game or activity were not as important to the children as the activity itself.

It is only when adults and parents took interest in the results, considered it personal, and made it part of the baggage of anxiety that they carry , that the problems began. When parents started paying , the problems accelerated. There is no turning back.

How many life skills were built determining yard-specific rules of Whiffle Ball?
