    Academic DIII

There were a number of threads earlier in the year about pursuing a competitive academic school like MIT, UChicago, Carnegie....etc and playing soccer. By now, everyone should have have heard back from their regular admissions. Anybody's kid get in or is able to afford it?

We went this route as my kid is a very good student with a lot of the hooks these schools supposedly look for in their "holistic" approach to admissions, sports, volunteer work, clubs, student government. 3.8/4.6/33, ECNL and ODP until year before last. Not a top 25 D1 player to be clear but starts.

Schools where she would play soccer:
      MIT- deferred then declined
      Johns Hopkins - wait list
      Tufts - wait list
(TBA) - accepted but would cost $28K/yr after all grants and scholarships.

Schools where she would not play soccer:
Duke - accepted - $32K/yr after all grants and scholarships.
      GT - wait list
UF - accepted - no cost
UCF - accepted - no cost
      USF- accepted - no cost

So the question now becomes, play soccer at top 50 engineering school up north and pay/take loans or don't play soccer at top 50 engineering school in Florida and go to school with no costs between Florida Prepaid, Bright Futures and schools academic scholarships/grants.

Wait list dates are pretty late so your kids essentially has to accept one of the schools they were accepted at and know you will eat a deposit if one of the other top choice pans out and the decision is to go there.

Additional word of caution. A coach saying your chances look good for getting in does not mean their getting in. While they do run your kids app by admissions to see if they are likely to be accepted, there is no guarantee.

Quick question....... did your child consider any of the D2 schools in state? If so any feedback on them?

Based on that list the student should not have considered any D2 schools. None compare academically.

Absolutely true. Same with Ivies. It's not final until you get that acceptance letter. Now it generally works out, but plenty of kids get burned every year.

True. I get what you are saying however depending on person’s major there might be one school like Embry Riddle that a kid might consider. I admit most of then are horrible. Especially the ones in South Florida.

Embry is so s specialized, not that well known, and god forbid they chance their mind of their academic study the other schools can give them many other options.

A D1 designation is no assurance of better academics. Look at Stetson and Jacksonville University for example. D1 sports, but no bigger in student size than Florida Southern, St, Leo, Lynn, or Rollins. University of Tampa is D2, but nearly identical in size to FGCU.

Embry-Riddle is very well-known in the aviation industry. It is a top producer of commercial airline pilots.

Bethune-Cookman is D1 and you only need a 2.25 GPA for admission. I'm guessing academics are not that demanding? Sports divisions should be irrelevant when looking at a school. They tell you nothing.

What does “student size” have to do with academics? I’m not saying Stetson or JU are strong academically, but the enrollment size is meaningless relative to academic rigor. Poor argument.
