How old is your son?

Generally, it's USYS/OYSA and USSDA for boys; US Club has little presence here on the boys's side. (Two local clubs do ECNL on the girls side).

Six clubs, along with the Portland Timbers MLS franchise, offer USSDA from U12-U14 (the Timbers do not have U12 at this time).

* Capitol FC Timbers, in Salem
* Crossfire Oregon, in Lake Oswego
* FC Portland, in Hillsboro
* United PDX, in Portland itself
* Washington Timbers, in Vancouver, WA
* Westside Timbers, in Beaverton

Some of these clubs may have openings; I will not steer you to any particular one, other than noting above where their training grounds are. (And traffic here is frequently bad).

Generally, the top OYSA clubs (the top division is called "OYSA Premier Green") that do not offer Development Academy teams are in one of three categories:
* Primarily Latino clubs (coaching offered mainly in Spanish), that lack the infrastructure/licenses for DA, but are often quite good (Cuervos, 4H, Academy Leon, IFC)
* Clubs in remote parts of the state that don't qualify for DA based on distance (Eugene Timbers, Bend Timbers, Rogue Valley Timbers),
* A few other clubs that aren't in DA for various reasons, but can compete at higher levels (ADF, FC Salmon Creek).

Also, there is something known as the Timbers Alliance. Several youth clubs (six in Oregon, one in Washington state, plus a few in other states that you won't ever see in league competition) have technical/marketing agreements with the Portland Timbers. The details of that arrangement aren't always clear, but such clubs have "Timbers" in the name (one chooses to call its girls' teams "Thorns" instead). This arrangement is a bit controversial, and there's a lot of nasty politics in the local soccer scene, with a group of clubs that seem to actively dislike the Timbers, or at least their involvement in the local youth soccer scene.

ODP is useful at U11, but for U12-U14 it is mainly replaced by the DA; it's benefit is for players in other parts of the state where there isn't a DA team.

We are currently playing U13 DA - I'm hoping that he can continue for the U14 season but don't really understand the structure up there. We're excited for the move and hope to find a good fit with a club right away.

Westside Timbers has the most storied history in the area. Their DOC is well known around the world for his training techniques. He has an academy (Tahuichi) down in South America. Diego Maradona himself has said, "The collective soccer which Tahuichi Academy plays is the best I have ever seen." He brings an intensive, accelerated experience. You must truly love the game and be willing to adapt to change. Your mind must remain open and accept the differences in paradigms and intensity of soccer in order to succeed in his program. Westside sets the bar for to p caliber club in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

If he is playing for a good socal DA, take him to TA.

Timbers Academy is a good option if you would like to have the Timbers MLS team be able to see him. FC Portland would be a good option if you want AS Roma Serie A tema to see him.

I'm a Westside parent, and although I like the club... the above appears to be trolling. And FWIW, Cony Konstin (the DoC) doesn't run Taihuichi--it's a Bolivian academy, and it's run by Bolivians. He instead runs a program by which American soccer players can go there to train.

The relevant aspects of Westside for you to know:

* The A teams, particularly pre-DA, can be very high-pressure environments, and many of the coaches are very old-school in their technique. The U13 DA coach is also known for being rather intense. The coach of the U14 and U12 DA teams is a bit less so, though he is still quite no-nonsense. A lot of parents in the metro area dislike the club for this reason.
* At the younger ages (up until middle school, particularly below U13) the club focuses on technique far more than it does on tactics.
* Not sure if there is an opening on the U13 team. There may be an opening or two on the U14 team; the club will encourage talented players to play up. Contact the club office for more information.
* The DoC is a strong proponent of, and an internationally-known expert in, the game of futsal. It's a big part of the curriculum.
* The club has an impressive (by Oregon standards) roster of alumni, including current Club Tijuana and USMNT forward Rubio Rubin, and MLS veteran Erik Hurtado. It is a far stronger club for boys than for girls.
* The club is quite racially diverse, both in players and coaching staff. If you are a Trump voter, you will not be happy at Westside. Hopefully this is not an issue for you--anyone is welcome, regardless of background--but on the off chance that you're the sort of individual who might object to your DS having a large number of nonwhite teammates, Westside is not the club for you.

As a parent of multiple boys playing at multiple age groups, location plays an enormous part of our decision on which club we play with. I don't have hours of extra time on my hands to sit on the roads (or for that matter at the fields waiting....). I might suggest you locate a strong DA team or strong OYSA team close to where you will actually be living. It might make life a bit more bearable. For example, I'm not sure why anyone living in Clackamas would want to make the drive to Hillsboro/Beaverton to get to Westside or FC Portland...but there are certainly people with more time to kill than myself. I'm not willing to let my son's soccer dictate our life or entire week. But hey - there are plenty of people on this crazy forum (see '05s) that try and live out their High-School JV experience through their kids.

Lots of luck to you! There are great people up here, but watch out for the wackjobs with a completely distorted view of reality.

Love when parents put down others that go the extra distance for their kids. It may just be the parents think the product is better and worth the extra 40 minutes a night drive time. I think what troubles people like this the most is, it may be worth it.

Sadly, I suspect not. Sounds more like a Crossfire parent trying to recruit, on the off chance the OP is living in Clackamas County, and might not know where the local DA clubs are located.
