Anyway, it was starting to become a trend a few years ago but there isn't any decent science to back up its ability to protect from concussions. I hardly see anyone using it any longer. The only kid I can think of that I personally know was one that had a concussion a few years ago (not even that bad) and his parents are insanely over protective (only child)Comment

The Comets used to make all their players wear them. I think OD got a cut on each one purchased. Mouth guards do much more to protect against concussions than headgear do.Comment

Most concussions in soccer are caused by collisions between to players or the head striking the ground. Not the intentional heading of the ball.
These collisions result in the whiplash effect of the brain bouncing from one side of the skull to the other. That’s a function of neck muscles being able/unable to absorb some of the impact.
The headgear is great at reducing abrasions and contusions due to impact, but has little claim to reducing concussions.Comment

Mouth guards keep the jaw and neck muscles locked and reduce some of the head whip effect. My kid refuses to wear one though. She says it limits communication and makes breathing harder. I tell her, "You don't talk on the field anyway so what's the problem?". Still won't use one.Comment

My GK won't use one for that reason but she really does have to talk a lot. There isn't much evidence about its ability to reduce concussions but most other contact sports require them now. I chatted with a concussion doc about headgear. Apparently, there is no science to support any of the headgear out there with regards to preventing concussions. And, if you think about it, concussions are caused by movement of the brain inside the skull, so an external helmet won't be very effective. The doc did say that headgear would probably reduce the chance of cuts, bruises, and fractures to the skull itself. There was also the question of the helmet making the player more brave and more likely to engage in risky plays head first. So, my guess is, it is unlikely that headgear works well to prevent concussions but the jury is still out.Comment
