DA and ECNL Average Travel Budgets

Let me start by saying this is not intended to be another DA/ECNL debate. That is a different topic. The two leagues have similar travel costs so I am trying to get an honest assessment on how my club is doing to keep costs down.

Our club is requiring team travel to all away games(not a surprise) but they are also requiring team travel and lodging for the showcases which is driving the team budget to extremes. I am not new to this and know this is not a cheap adventure but I am feeling like our club is out of touch with the costs we are incurring.

So I ask this. What is your yearly team budget for all team expenses and travel? I will go first. This years budget just came out and we are at $4500 per player or about $560 a month for 8 months. This seems high to me and is a burden considering my family will also need to replicate expenses to see our child play. Please only comment if you have a player in one of the two leagues as the travel is roughly the same.

U don’t have to go if you are DA- all games are recorded and parents are given log ins at our club to view at their leisure

So is your club organizing team travel (bus, girls sharing rooms) or are parents driving their kids? If the former your costs should be lower. Not all clubs do that though. If parents have to drive one way to save is take turns with a few other families to out of state events. Airfare to out of state showcases can rack up the costs as well; again, go with a family, share a room and a rental car

Keep in mind for showcases the clubs have no choice but to book through a tournament sanctioned hotel "bookie." Is used that term intentionally. The prices are almost always higher than booking through something like Expedia. It's a total scam but clubs don't have a choice - the tournaments can kick you out if you don't use their hired service.

Anyway, all that said....costs of ECNL and DA are more of less the same. It is a well known fact. If you are new you should have done more homework. Whichever league you're with be glad you're in FL and each league has a showcase here. Teams from most other states have to fly to multiple events.

Travel sports are for the successful - if u smoked pot thru high school or majored in philosophy and now struggle to get a well paying job , it ain’t for you.

It’s all about life long decisions

Maybe if the puertorican girl from New York became president then everything would be free, then you complainers are good to go

Only have the Boys DA experience and know that it is not the Club, but instead the USSF which requires the DA teams to participate in the league play and showcase events, and know that the Club made its best effort to keep its DA travel expenses (plane or bus and hotel) as low as possible. However, because of the nature of the DA program, you should not expect for any players to be able to travel separately or have separate lodging from the rest of the team at any away game or non-local showcase event. We considered not being with our son at away games and non-local showcase events as part of his maturation process and it well prepared him for the collegiate soccer experience.

Our team fees are roughly $3500 and this includes travel to the showcase tournaments and all out of state trips. And it seems every year we always have some money left over, but not much. We're ECNL girls and this doesn't include travel expenses for us parents or siblings. Luckily we have a showcase in FL which reduces travel expenses and we usually try to go to one of the other 2 out of state showcases and Nationals if we are lucky. This soccer crap isn't cheap but I think we all knew that when we signed up. I estimate we'll spend +7K on soccer related expenses for the year if you include registration, team fees, equipment and travel related expenses for rest of family. No wonder some think this is the sport for elite as this is crazy but I feel I have no other choice if my daughter wants to play against top competition and further develop as a player. And I could care less about an athletic scholarship as that's not our focus as we'll spend far more money then we'll likely get back in return.

Making 100 k and being part of the middle clas is now considered “elite”?

Thanks for your divine wisdom. I actually like my money and don’t take lightly to it being indiscriminately wasted. A man that wastes money and does not hold people accountable for it soon will have none.

Spending more than 10% of your take home pay on soccer is now considered sensible?
