    Phillips Academy

My D is going to be applying to prep school. In MA, she will apply to Andover. Obviously not a guarantee by a long shot so she's going to apply closer to home as well. I know how things work here but not in MA.

She's a good student and a solid soccer player, but she's not thinking D1, nor is she probably that level. We are several years out but if I had to guess now, I would guess she will go to D3 for academics but will want to play soccer too. She really, really loves to play and she is capable on the field.

So if she was lucky enough to get into Andover, is the soccer program strong enough to get her noticed at a D3? Or would she also be looking to do a club out of school?

To go to most D3, she doesn’t even need prep. High NEP and NPL would be fine. However, add any prep and that’s an easy route. You would probably want her to continue some club outside of prep soccer season to continue her training, but like I said, high NEP or NPL is fine for most D3 assuming her soccer is at least at that level.

Agreed. Send her to prep school if you want and can afford the academics. Don't do it for soccer if D3 is her. Prep school is less of a factor in women's soccer than it is men's anyway. Even with prep she still needs a quality club the rest of the year. So then you're paying $50K plus soccer. If you live in a poor quality school district consider a local, top quality private day school - or move to a high performing public school district.

Does Prep benefit getting into D1/D2? Just looking at possible Prep high schools for next year, D currently on an NPL team.

As someone said above, only do prep school if that's the education you want for your student. If she's an NPL level player then prep soccer won't be a big difference maker, especially since not all prep soccer is the same. At the top programs she probably won't play much. Lower programs she'd play more but the training won't be any better than some decent HS programs. Where the bulk of her training comes from is club soccer, and she'd still have to play club too. An NPL level player can get onto some D1 programs but mostly lower level. The are more opportunities in D2 (academics generally aren't great) and D3. If higher D1 is her goal she should try and go GDA or ECNL, but only if she'd play a great deal. Don't move her if she won't get significant PT

Perfect, thank you. We are definitely choosing a prep school for academics. Since she also has a strong interest in soccer, we just want to be sure she isn't excluding herself from potential opportunities in college, if that's the direction she goes. It's really hard making decisions now about things that may or may not happen a few years from now! This was exactly the info I needed. Thanks again.

              Talking soccer

She will be well served at Andover. The coach does a very nice job. They play arguably the best schedule in New England Prep because they are not in a league. Many of their players play in college.

I know the OP is interested in girls, but for others who come to the thread, prep school has a huge impact (potentially) for boys' soccer.

Many Prep schools, Andover included, will provide a great experience that publics simply can’t touch. Do it for that. I am not aware of ANY Prep kids getting “Offers” (D1/2 scholarship; Prestige D3 admissions support) who didn’t also play club. The same demographic that pays for prestige club soccer likes to pay for prestige academics. Those Prep commitments are from players club, not the school. Fact that player has academic preparation from Prep (hence the name) eases anxiety of admissions office at college.

As long as your kid performs well academically at the Prep. Otherwise, he/she will be looked at as below a top performing public school student (as it should be).

Yes. The prep school gets you through admissions. Your club training helps you land a soccer spot. Even players at top boys soccer prep schools like South Kent are playing top club somewhere (BDA and other).

Yup - always keep in mind that 80% of ISL kids are outside the top 20% of their class.
Elite NESCACS and Ivies don’t dare admit anyone outside the top 20% - unless their top 2% player. But a top 10% player in middle of their class will have more college admissions options going thru public. But the experience at prep school and the friends with ocean frontage are pretty cool

It's about the academics but the sports got him there. We will see where it leads.

If Andover accepts your D, congrats. It’s an incredible opportunity for her.

But if you’re looking at other preps that have strong academics, girls soccer and supports club Soccer take a look at Pomfret School in nearby CT. Excellent school on the rise. Excellent girls soccer team with one of the top woman coaches in New England. Coach also coaches FSA ECNL and drives her team back and forth to FSA for winter and spring practices. She is very dedicated to her team and the school supports the girls playing at FSA. Girls from Pomfret are playing at Amherst, Holy Cross, Trinity to name a few. Beautiful campus. Well worth a look.
