Curious what is reasonable and what is too much? Kid just moving up to 9v9.

What is a reasonable roster size for 9v9?

14 max. Problem is, the coach needs to look ahead to when the team plays 11v11, so needs to make sure he has the numbers for that switch. So, expect 18.

Roster sizes
9 v 9
Best roster size is 12, 13 is MAX if the talent pool is deep enough to warrant that 13th player.
The problem is that if your talent level drops off, everyone is unhappy.
I love an 11 player roster for 9 v 9 (but 12 is right)

You can still have 11v11 friendlies with this many kids (and they can invite a kid from another team at your club if you need one or two more).

Adding unnessary players to justify the 11 vs 11 transition is code for “take the extra body” so we can lock them for the years to come.
Wouldn’t you rather have 13 or 14 well trained players getting plenty of minutes than have to shorten everyone’s minutes to fit 18 players in the game.

If you develop the team well in that year before the switch, the word will get out and you can fill in the last 4-5 spots at tryouts in the spring.
If they didn't make your 9v9 team, they are either playing popup or rec. If rec., they won't have the skills you need. If popup, you lost them.

Thanks. Kid plays premier but wants to stick with town travel also. It’s fun and social. Afraid the roster will be huge to keep parents happy that their kid made travel. Way more kids were at tryouts than a few travel teams. 40? Guess we will see what the numbers are and make a decision.

If you’re suggesting that rosters are locked in at U13 you’re either a bad coach that can’t atract talent or your squad is so talent filled you don’t want to rock the boat.
