Thank god for the birth year mandate

The birth year mandate has really positively changed the landscape of youth soccer. It is so much easier to spot the truly good players now that the talent is not muddied up by the school calendar. I am so happy and youth soccer has improved delramatically as a result

If "improved delramatically" is the opposite of "improved dramatically" then I agree with your last sentence.

I took this to be a sarcastic post by the OP.

USSF doing a bang-up job. USMNT didn't qualify for WC or Olympics, despite ten years of BDA. Birth year mandate they forced onto everyone, even though it only matters to a tiny fraction of players. now the GDA debacle. Well done USSF

This was been debated here a lot with more logic against it. I leaned against it and seeing what it has done to the junior/ senior experience I feel stronger that this has way more negatives then any potential upside.

The ECNL should stick it to the Federation & abandon the Birth Year Mandate. Playing by grade would have appeal to the 99.5% of kids that care more about playing in college than for the National Team & accelerate the demise of the DA.

It would be another way to differentiate themselves from DA. Play HS and play with your same-aged friends (although players tend to come from all over, not often the same schools). Easier for college coaches to keep track of also.

Really it should be abolished for all teams except DA.

Agree...go back to school year. Birth year is a joke for a strategy to help the national team. It has been a complete failure to the kids. 8th grade, junior and senior years are awful. These kids want to go to College.

School year fans can’t take the idea that even though they gave little Johnny the “gift of time” and red shirted them for kindergarten, that advantage is wiped away.

Wow, there are a lot of crybabies on here. If you don't like birth years, go cry to FIFA. On the flip side it is a lot easier to tell who plays on what team. Do you want to know what team you are on, just find out your birth year and the corresponding team. Easy, peezy, Japanesy!!! The top 8th graders are probably going to be heading to DA teams who practice 10 months a year anyways and the rest are most likely just playing for fun or with their friends so . . . it's not the legitimate issue some bitter parents make it out to be.

You don’t seem to get it. You keep drinking the Koolaid. The US Soccer organization has failed miserably throughout the years in men’s soccer, never once winning the World Cup. They have promised so many magic fixes through the years, including the present birth year magic fix, and NONE of them have worked. You have a choice. Be intelligent and STOP listening to the idiots who promise that they have the answer only to fail time and again. Or continue to listen and believe in proven failures. Here’s an idea. I agree, birth year is stupid. Make soccer cheap. Until then, rich male kids will continue to lose and not qualify for the World Cup. Go into any of the hotbeds and training grounds for Basketball. Show up, call next, play. Don’t have to play club dues or anything to get trained against some truly talented players. Young bucks show up and get tutored by the older bucks on the other non main courts and have games run for them. Just need sneakers. That formula has the US dominating the world in both men’s and women’s basketball.

The rest of the world uses birth-year. You may be too young to remember but travel soccer back in the 80’s was birth- year.. I was always the youngest on the squad. We can’t dictate to the world.

So it’s already been tried and failed. How many World Cups did the USMNT win in the 1980’s-1990’s?
