If you are on a top competitive team playing rpl or national league, Top national tournaments budget between 4k to 5k per year for travel.
Some clubs have additional coaching fee that can add another 1k-3k per year.
That does not include personal training and equipment.
Soccer is not cheap on the top level

Maybe football is the only sport that I can think of that does not cost a lot to play and get recruited, maybe basketball with a high school, not AAU.

Some of those stats are very inflated. There also aren't nearly as many kids participating in gymnastics, golf and tennis as soccer. The bigger sports (football, basketball, baseball and soccer) have more levels of play so families can find programs that suit their budget. The problem with soccer is that to play in college it's very difficult to get discovered without playing in expensive leagues. Other sports + track offer more chances for talented non affluent kids to be seen.

In other sports scouts go to your high school basketball or football game and you get noticed. Soccer you need to go to events where scouts are, sometimes multiple events. No one notices you just playing locally. cost of travel is a huge component. Also as you progress in soccer it is hard to find competitive matches locally. Must travel w/in state, w/in regional and then maybe nationally. No way around it. To get seen you need to hop on a plane.

Baseball and baseketball are completely driven by clubs in terms of recruiting. HS baseball and basketball is not where you are recruited at all.
Baseball has summer showcase tournament circuit. College coaches ONLY scout those or their own camps. Typically cost is between 2-5k for a full summer worth if tournaments and travel.
Basketball again is completely driven by the AAU teams and large national style tournaments
Located all over the country. California, Vegas, Orlando, Indy. Again big travel $$$ unless you are so good that your on a sponsored team that picks up all expenses....think Nike, AU, Adidas teams.
