    Recruiting Musings

So I saw that the new UConn HC joined the international recruiting ranks and out of interest in the process I found this recent research paper where Women's soccer is currently defined as the most 'untapped' of the sports studied with hockey at 23 % and women's soccer at 3.3%.

    https://scholarcommons.sc.edu/cgi/vi...14&context=etd

Now this is a long paper but very well written and my curiosity in Women's soccer ISAs stems from the high likelihood my DD will play alongside ISA's at schools she's interested in and it is something we feel will add positively to the experience.

That said I thought to start a thread on the general state of current recruiting practice locally, regionally, nationally and team dynamics and not just on ISA scholarship impact and ask what experiences people might want to share.

College recruiting just got much more difficult for D1 head coaches. They went from getting the majority of their recruits from ECNL, to now having to sort through ECNL, GDA and International.

Coaches from the men's side can give them helpful hints. They've been dealing with international recruiting for years. But there's far more well trained international male players out there - essentially rejected from pro programs - than there are similar for women.

The pool of international women is much smaller. US has the best possible recruiting pool for women's soccer.

International is compelling because it stretches the almighty dollar. Find a tough poor kid from Manchester, England. Qualify for a full ride with need based financial aid. Save the athletic funds for the suburban ECNL kids who won't get a dime of financial aid.

D2 tuitions tend to be lower, not cheap but lower. Some countries help pay for a US education. Some families can simply afford it. Any school can grant merit dollars to help as well

I read as part of student visa application families must prove they can afford the full cost of tuition but I imagine there's nothing saying a school has to charge it. Probably not too many at the poverty level coming over based on the visa application requirements.

Most likely that is what is happening - just present your school bill to INS. Between athletic money and merit "grants" the bill might actually be very low. International students don't qualify for government loans and aid but can apply for private loans.

I looked at the top 5 schools tuition out of curiosity. Some of these schools are smaller and don't have football teams, so that would free money up for men's soccer. Even when they have football they have a very limited number of men's sports.

#1 Charleston WVa (private, not a state school) $44K, football, 1600 students
                #2 Lynn $53K; no football, 2100 students
                #3 2000 $51K; no football, 2100 students
#4 Cal Poly Pomona $37K (out of state), no football, 23,700 students
#5 Midwestern State, $23K (yes), football, 5400 students

I'm curious as to where these 5 schools you list came from?
